Yep its the same 5 Cylinder engine 2.7 Turbo Diesel as in the W163 ML. This engine is also used in some older Ssangyong Rexton models.

The 2.7 engine was a bored out version of the earlier 2.5 that they built for yonks and put in the old C Class. The engine is pretty reliable being a chain driven camshaft as are all UK market Mercs.

Trouble with the W163 was inconsistent US build quality, poor ride and lack of steering feel plus daft things like if the angle sensor fails you have to replace the whole steering column think £1,000 ish for the part! On later W164 it is a replaceable sensor costing less than £100.

Later Jeep Grand Cherokee has the 3 litre V6 Mercedes Diesel unit until the Mercedes engine supply deal finished after MB offloaded Chrysler-Jeep.

a neighbour has the jeep commander with the 3.0 v6 td, i'm considering it in distant future, the idea of a yank yacht appeals even with merc hardware. also thought of pathfinder but seems they have been known to suffer the same chassis issues as the
navaras. also a late y61 trol.

I like the Commander too not sure where they are built.

I like the Commander as well they are not stupid money either but suspension parts etc might be pricey as there is not the same range of aftermarket spares available. I guess they are a bit thirsty due to the size & weight.

The likes of Blueprint & others make a lot of WJ, WK spares, many engine / gearbox components are MB sourced designs until you get to the newer models.

UK RHD WJ series is built in Austria and some in South Africa for other RHD markets.

Most people think that Mercededs models such as the popular C class are built in Germany but are in fact built in South Africa as well as the Ml /GLE being built in the USA. Not sure where the Commander is built. Interestingly MB brochures refer to German Engineering and carefully avoid build information.

Anyone ever had the older XJ Jeep Cherokee?

Some of the older 4x4's look cool and with a 4.0 v6 I think petrol, will sound and drive nice aswell.

Don't know if they are any good though?

Not sure but think they are a straight six - a strong engine by all accounts.

Yes 4.0 straight six, very good engine and vehicles, good off-road too, and comfy, going up in value now too :thumb2

I've had a few xj's both petrol and diesel. 4.0ltr is a straight 6, great engine but obviously a bit thirsty. Diesel is a good engine if looked after. They are brilliant off road, bit of a lift and some decent tyres and sorted for pretty much all UK lanes. I would have another anytime but rust is an issue, especially with the earlier ones.

Thanks guys, that's good feed back.

Is there anywhere in particular they tend to rust out first, like back end of the chassis on a disco 2, or wings on the Nissan for example?

What's best to look for when buying?

There is one quite close to me and I could go have a look.

I would give an XJ a good look all over. They aren't a separate chassis so no worries with that. I think the later ones, '97 onwards (but don't quote me on that) are galvanised and less prone to rust. All of the ones i have had have been rust free. The petrol motor is bullet proof. The diesel is a 2.5 turbo. It's the VM engine thats fitted in quite a few cars, P38 Range Rover, one of the Frontera's and more. Great engine if it has been looked after, otherwise prone to head gasket failure. There is a less popular 2.5 petrol. Don't bother with one of those, even if you find one cheap. Just as expensive to run as the 4.0ltr and way too under powered.

They are brilliant off road, equal to a Land Rover any time. Then again they are the ones Land Rover copied so should be..

I would say, if you find a good one snap it up. They seem to be going up in value as well, the days of a great one for £600 seem to have gone, unless you are lucky.

a few of my old ones

Top one is a diesel, the others petrol. I never had a problem with any of them.

I remember when I worked for a used car dealership years ago, we did not even want them in part ex because we couldn't shift them, wish I had one now though, I've always liked them, good interiors :thumb2

The one I was wanting to have a look at sold immediately :lol

The search for a 4x4 goes on but I have time

With the Jeeps recent leaking injectors it got me thinking what will we replace her with when she is BER (beyond economic repair).

It would only need a major component failure such as the gearbox /transfer box/rear axle to trigger a BER replacement.

As it is the Wife's Motor this train of thought is a tricky one to navigate. I have always ruled out anything like a Range Rover / Disco/Money Pit.

I might have to swallow the crazy increase in VED for post March 2006 Diesel Power as the latest generation 4x4's are outside our present budget of up to £8k.

I know a later Grand Cherokee & a Patrol would fit the bill in terms of required size, Jeeps seem easy to find with under 70k miles on the clock.

I was not mad about our old Santa Fe as everything seemed to start leaking oil as it was out of the long warranty. A neighbour has nice looking a Kia Sportage but TBH we prefer the bigger Sorento.

Replacement would have to fit three initial essential criteria.

1) Be an Automatic.

2) Have under 70k miles on clock.

3) Not be LPG powered.

What do our family here suggest I look at - hopefully we will get another 2-3 years out of the WJ ?

Have you thought about a BMW X5?

Mate, just get a Terrano :thumb2

I do like the look of Zac's 3.0 :augie

BMW X5 is a tricky one. Why is such an expensive car when new now so cheap. I do know they have the odd problem and can be very expensive to repair. Same as he Porsche Cayenne

Oh and sorry to the OP if I've kind of hi-jacked this thread, it was just right timing of the question for me too.

If you want me out of this please let me know and I'll start a thread for my search

Have been considering in the far future, did you know the emissions must
be better as even 07 plates are only 300 or so quid.

my thought was x5 as road and caravan tug and proper off roader as toy.

some of those 3.0td churn out some mega power, drove a newish one when were
new and seemed good, had ride in one recently and nice n comfy family wagon.

seen as sav? not suv but wonder apart from lack of low box if could be set up for
mild off roading.

Give me a few months and I think it will be up for sale, already got my eyes on my next project :naughty

Need to find a new truck by end of May or wife wont have a car lol

I did hear something recently about future emissions tests... The future looks bleak for Diesel Power! :doh
