today I learned welding.

Phew its hard innit?.
I ain't welded with a mig ever.
The last time I stick welded was on a yts 30 years ago.
The welder was a Clarke 160 turbo on the lowest power.
And I was melting the plate.
I eventually fitted 4 plates.one one each end of both sills.
I uncovered one section of what I consider heavy rust due to a water pocket under the
Rubbery underseal.
Its all done now ready for making tidy.protecting.waterproofing.painting and waxoyling.
God its so satisfying doing these jobs yourself.
But I need a lot of practice..

Only ever tried a little bit of welding once with acetylene & just blew huge holes in the metal:doh never tried any other type of welding but would love to learn how to do it

Surely not all welders need a 16amp supply. Also you shouldnt burn your electrics out if your using correct circuit breakers or fuses for the ring main.

I have a SIP Migmate 130 and that's all I have ever done, never had any issues

It's just like using a Silicone gun but a bit hotter.

Had big fo gloves on.and still had a couple of warm moments..
Mig is completely different from what I remember of arc.
There's a lot more going on the weld from a stick rather than meting the metal together with a mig.
It was my mates welder but he knew as much as me???.

Questions.
When mig welding.
Dog out have to still arc motion or just straight line it?

I use forward, small circular movements when MIG welding.

you can stick weld with two car batteries and a set of jumper cables. lol.

after all a welder is just a DC inverter.


you can even get a spooling mig handle type welder now too.

You don't 13a will cope with lower power just fine, 150-160a will be the max you can get out of the welder from 13a. Prolonged welding at max power may warm the plug up a bit thats the first sign

Did you stitch weld or just try it in one go, If in one go try stitch welding thin stuff :thumbs

did you put the power down?

Also adjust wire speed on a spare bit of plate to get that frying bacon sound.

I really enjoy welding with mig or stick when welding new or clean thick steel.

Can't say I enjoy welding thin steel when lying on my back & sparks rolling down my arm all the steel wants to do is twist and warp with the heat.

Just when you get that nice frying bacon sound you usually have to let go the trigger as you also have the authentic smell of burning flesh :splif

I found this site helped me loads . http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/learning-mig.htm . plus if you get a welder from mc mart don't buy any without a plug on it as once you cut the clips off to put a plug on the guarantee is void the one I got is this one as I wanted a gas/ gasless welder . because will be doing welding outside a lot https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/mig130en-turbo-no-gas-mig-welder . and they said it's the biggest one with a plug on it and be careful to run off a separate fuse like the cooker

Fez on post 13 has it spot on, I just could not find those words, as for laying on your back with the spatter running down your arms, those days are over for me, I now have a two post lift, oil for it comming tomorrow, all I need for it to be operational, Rick
