Tirfor winch on bumper

So guys, ive got an idea.

For legality reasons as people on here have mentioned when my steel bumper goes on I must by law, have a winch in the bumper.

Question is, as I now have my heavy duty Tirfor winch, could I theoretically secure this to my front bumper/behind bumper to body?

The cable is huge as rick will tell you, he was shocked when he saw how heavy duty the cable was, i guess this is a good thing.

I know some of you will suggest getting electric and yes not a bad idea, just as I already have my winch I was hoping to save costs. :thumb2

Just what I was quoted on here. In so many words, to have a steel bumper it must be an equipment bumper ( i e winch)

Otherwise it is not classed as road legal :nenau

EU frontal protection regs made fitting frontal protection like steel bumper's illegal after (I think) 2007.

I think you can still get away with non-eu passed bullbars if your vehicle is a certain age but I can't remember the date I just know my m-reg Shogun was fine to have an a-bar installed.

The only way to get round the regs is to have a winch installed as the bumper then becomes a winch bumper which means it is classed as equipment instead of frontal protection.

If you google winch bumpers and legality there's a whole load of stuff on the net and other 4x4 forums. End of the day I reckon spending a little bit of cash on a winch to turn your steel bumper into a winch bumper is better than running the risk. :nenau

Far as I know it is the winch bit that makes it a winch mount/bumper so don't think it matters whether it's electric or manual or otherwise.

Problem I can see trying to fit the Tirfor is that it's physically big and far as I know you only fit the cable when using it and so could be fiddly if it's encased in a bumper and bolted to the chassis?

I wouldn't, as rain and dirt will get into the tirfor and break it.

Alex......a few polite words DO NOT FIT YOUR TIRFOR TO YOUR T....they are only meant to be a portable manual winch. I personally think there may be serious repercussions, in the event of any sort of mishap on the road or off.
It is not your best idea yet.....:doh

You will find the best place to attatch the tirfor is to the tree our other truck that you are useing as a anchor point attatch the end of the cable to your truck so it would be best to keep it in the boot

Thanks for the replies all. Good answers and I will certainly heed the advise. How difficult is it to mount electric winch to chassis?

I take it the winch ca be behind the bumper and still be legal?

Alex, temper your enthusiasm, with time and good research, use the search engine on this site for all references to electric winches or winches....and see what comes up.
Then read very carefully and then proceed even more carefully, it is not just a matter of hanging it off the chassis.......construction and use regulations, health & safety, good engineering and engineering ability etc all must come into play......

It needs to be a winch bumper so the winch mount has obviously got to be part of the bumper rather than separate, whether it's in front of the bumper (rubbish place to put it) or at the back of the bumper and between the chassis rails like mine.

So realistically your looking at a winch tray welded to the bumper (so it's part of it) AND bolted to the chassis in its own right or incorporating a reinforced mounting plate on the bumper to bolt the winch to - that's what they use in the ARB bumpers like mine.

Looks like I might have to sell the Tirfor

Shame really as the Tirfor is a manic bit of kit. You should see the cable on this bad boy :lol

You'll find more use out of a 12v electric winch bud.

I've used mine for everything but winching the truck so far, pulling stock trailers out so they can be hitched up... tug of war with my bodybuilder mate (that was funny :lol, Foxy won)...

Is 13,000lb the strongest winch. If I'm gonna get electric i don't wanna a crappy one. I want it to be able to pull me out of a swamp :sly
