Hi all,

I recently tinted my rear side windows OK:thumb2

In order to do the rear door windows I feel I need to remove the rubber seal that nestles in the door card, how do I remove the door card enough to get the film past the rubber seal.

I can't see any screws near the top of the card, I do not want to apply force in case there is some kind of mechanical fixing, if it is held with the plastic clips I will use some force.

I have looked at the manual, do not see a section that covers door cards

HELP:bow:bow

I've only got front doors on mine sorry :lol
I guess they'll be the same. Start at the bottom unclipping then lift up. The card sort of sits on the door top edge :thumbs

remove plastic surround from the door handle and the ashtray needs to come out, just the one screw, plastic surround is just clipped, flat bladed screwdriver removes it easy enough, the card is just clipped on, again flat bladed screwdriver to remove the first bit then just pull at it and it should pull away easy enough

I managed to fit my tints without removing the rubber strip.

I cut along about 1" lower than the rubber and then slid the tint past the rubber one bit at a time using the plastic squeegie thing.

In fact this bit was quite easy.

I spent about 4 hours doing all my back 5 windows recently. I thought I had done a good job - all the bubbles out looking good, all the windows going up and down.

Then in the morning it had all peeled off

Completely useless stuff.

:doh

I have the stuff from Lidl, did the rear fixed windows a month or two ago, still there:clap
Plan to do the back doors this week, I will try your way before removing the backing sheet to make sure I can get it down below the rubber.
Thanks for the tip about the rubber
I am not looking forward to doing the rear door glass, with compound curves I can foresee some wrinkles.:doh:doh

As window tinters we would always remove movable glass such as door windows, its easier to complete on a table top and cleanliness is easier to control away from the car and all the dirty rubbers.

The rear window is much more tricky to complete than any other windows, just remember to always form it on the outside of the glass and heating to shrink the film a small bit at a time.

It is like most jobs its relatively easy to do once you know all the little tricks of the trade and takes a bit of practice.

If you want a top job doing i would always recommend taking it to a proper tinter where you will get a guarantee on the materials and workmanship.

cheers
stephen

Hi Stephen

Thanks for the tips, getting the glass out could be a nightmare so I will give that a miss

The heat gun sounds the answer to the back window, I saw that a while ago on TV, I will try that on my old van first in case I overheat the glass.:doh

The price of the stuff at Lidl was a few quid so I had to have a go.

I have done some house windows so had a vague idea.

Is there any law to stop me using mirror foil on front doors glass? it does not stop much light. Lidl had some of that too also only a few quid.

anything behind the b pillar is fine, not allowed to tint anything in front of it though, as most cars now are tinted to the legal limit when they leave the factory

Yes i agree there, you are allowed to do anything rear of the B pillar which is the one next to your shoulder when sat in the front seats

All modern cars windows have a slight tint on as standard, even though its not always obvious to see, and the manufacturers usually tint them to just within the law, meaning you do anything with them and they become illegal....and thats not worth the hassle...

What's the best way to remove the residue from window film? My back windows are mirrored and it looks wrong lol so going to peel it off tomorrow ImageUploadedByTapatalk1371151812.259204.jpg

Bloody things just peeled off, never left a mark! On father in laws Omega it took him weeks, loads of meths and elbow grease to remove the sticky marks left behind.

I'll post a pic of the new look once I get the front back on again, changing the chrome front look too.....

I did one of my back door windows today, on the door could not find the screws to remove the door card:doh

I will stick to cutting and mitring worktops so much easier

Very fiddly with the windows in the door, off the door would have been easier.
This was the third window of 5 I have done, window one, rear fixed drivers side was a disaster, no forward planning total c*ock up good job the film was cheap.
Ok I learned from that one so do it again, 2nd one easier.
Hardest bit on the door was tucking the film past the rubbers and the sun in my eyes, oh yes and starting to separate the film from the backing.
I found trying to tear the film showed a small gap, slip the scalpel in and Bobs yer dads bruvver.
I am not looking forward to the rear door with the convex glass, leaving that to last.
One valuable tip, RTFM or IAEFRTFM:eek:

put a bit of tape on each side of the film to pull it apart :thumb2

wet the windows plenty before taking the backing off

this helps to slide the film around and stop creases, warm water helps it a bit more than cold and also but a drop of johnsons babybath in it, the stuff in the blue bottle :thumb2
