Which model, year, Td or Tdi, will help us.

With any relay clicking, always check the battery voltage first, or make sure your headlights are bright.

It could well be a faulty earth, but it depends what the relay is for.

I don't know any relays in the boot area, but it could be an after market fitment.

So I would go with something to do with any tow bar wiring, it could be a split charge relay, or a fog light cut out relay.
So it might only be damp / corrosion in the caravan socket, so work up from there.

If the wiring is connected with those plastic snap in connectors...
They don't like the damp.

Hope it helps.

Best regards,
Rustic

Ta for quick reply it's an 05 5dr 2.7 and has got twin electrics fitted will have a look Ta

If it has a tow bar with double sockets, it's more than likely to be the relay that helps charge the caravan battery, but these normally tick when the car is not putting enough charge into the trailer battery (when on tick over etc.) and only when the trailer is fitted:confused:

Hi all, got to page 35 before giving up the search for help:nenau. This is the closest post to my problem.
I have a relay chattering really badly , it is located round the glovebox area .worse when at standstill but comes snd goes at various throttle positions. Nothing sppears to be be affected by this but it's really loud snd annoying.
My motor is a 2002 lwb auto 2.7tdi
Hopefully someone has a clue on this.
Cheers

Actuallly if the throttle is depressed 10/20mm it dissapears again untill its released

split charge relay in nearside rear, as you have twin towing electrics, check conmnetions to relay, on some models there are potentiometers fitted ( a small adjustment screw should be visivble) this is set to a certain voltage so to protect the main battery in the vehicle from draining too low, once engine revs and battery condition has reached the set voltage then it will charge the auxillary battery ( caravan) i think you will find that it set about 13v so it will start to trickle the auxillary battery, if it is on the threshold of on/off you would hear the relay chatter ( ticking usally very fast) I would try this for starters, there not too dear to replace if i remember right, good luck
