Well yesterday I replaced my water pump but when I flushed the rad out O noticed afterwards my expansion bottle was messy.

Just taken it off and thew bottom looked like it was full of copper slip, washed it out and full of shiny specks.Am, I right in assuming that is the remains of my waterpump bearing?

It did work but just leaked, new one seems fine?

Copper slip... rad weld looks similar to that, is it squishy when you squeeze it.

Metal fragments... the only moving parts in the cooling system is the pump.
It could be the bearing has gone, or worn in such a way the pump fins are contacting the housing. Any shiny points on your old pump?

yep thats what it was like, just looked at the old pump, its fooked but cant see any shiny bits but it makes a noise when rotating so can tell bearings had gone.

Maybe the last owners put in rad weld thinking it would help not realising the pump was at fault? Hope it wasn't a cylinder head issue that got plugged as I have no issues that show it had this problem.

Maybe it would help if I got the coolant system flushed properley at a garage?

Mine was leaking on my Maverick, I replaced it which sealed the leak and then caused a knock on effect further up the system which then caused my thermostat to fail closed somehow and nearly fried my head!!!! :doh

Gulp hope that doesn't happen to me.

Just been out and all seems well, not sure if I have put a belt on a bit too tight though as its whistles when it reaches 3k on the revs, didnt do it before belts were changed?

try and clean as much out as possible :thumb2

Im going to dump the new coolant out again at the weekend and put in rad flush and replace coolant afterwards.

The expansion bottle is squeeky clean now though.

May just be moisture, but could well be that you have fitted it too tight, loosen it off a tad and see if the pitch changes or the noise dissappears totally then re-adjust accordingly.

I'd replace the stat anyways, mine was £7 and took 4 mins to replace, also they come in different ratings, I got an 82 degree one I think which just means it opens sooner, which in turn gives you heat quicker from the heaters :sly

Doesn't give you heat any quicker, in fact the interior heater won't get as hot as a highe temperature stat, once the cylinder head and engine block get to 82 c the stat opens, and it means that any excess heat will start to be dumped into the main front mounted radiator, keeping the engine block, and so interior heater at 82c. Max.

An 88 c thermostat would allow the engine block to get hotter and since the interior heater is fed off this part of the engine, so that would get hotter too, and make the interior warmer.

Good idea on the stat, I will order one better be safe thasn sorry.

Not looking forward to messing with the belts lol after replacing them as did them whilst the shroud and rad were out to make it easy was thinking to see if it goes away as they stretch slightly with it being new. I didnt do them real tight, just so they deflect about an inch on their longest run?

Copper flecks in the coolant sounds like it has had k seal in the system.
Could have been used to mask the fact that the water pump was leaking.
Not to scare you but I had a Toyota estima that had coolant problems so I flushed the system and replaced the stat.
I also found copper filings in the old coolant which turned out to be k seal that had been used to mask a cracked cylinder head.
Not a common problem on these trucks thank god.

I think the waterpump was leaking for a long time previous to me getting the motor last week but the original owners didnt know it was the pump until I pointed it out.

It certainly wasn't the cylinder head due to the symptoms but whatever happens this is a keeper as its a great truck and only has 87K on the clock.

out of interest a few have said about replacing the stat, is it essential if mine seems to be working fine?

Not essential mate but I would whilst messing with that part of the system but only because of my bad experience in the past, can't harm to fit a new part

In for a penny in for a pound, your right it makes sense

that's the spirit, just look for the stat housing on the top near the rad pipe, sure mine was just 3 bolts and a gasket!!!

Then it just pulls out
