Inside car not getting very warm so bought a 88c thermostat, took the housing of to change it and found no stat at all so put my new 88c one in all was fine on a short run.come to work in it this morning got warm in the cab but my motor started running like a bag of knackers coughing and farting, it has to be down to the stat but why, feel sure if I take it out as it was it will run fine but surely can't be good with no stat in

Could be head problems, some people if they know the head gasket has gone will take the Sat out to stop it getting hot, this then stops the water steaming out the blown head gasket. Now you have fixed it the engine is getting hot again and flooding the pistons with water making it cut out a bit. I hope im wrong, have a look at the amount of water you got and then take it for a good run. see what you have when you get back.

Mmmmm fingers crossed then could do without head gasket problems will let you know how I go on later in week with it

And forgot to add that the revs kept going up and down on there own just up to about 2500 revs n back

yep check coolant level as kamsin says .... doesnt cost owt to check ... also get a torch and shine it into expansion tank to check for bubbles ...... again costs nowt to check .

Spoke to my mate earlier he mentioned about an air block in water system, plus I haven't been losing water at all and I changed oil and filters ect a few months ago and no sign of water

Hmm, yeah check for air lock. Also just check you haven't caught the No 1 Injector too. Clivvy and others have had issues with Number 1 causing problems.

bad to run with no stat, much more complicated than will explain here, but will make no difference head gasket gone or not, most likely you did not bleed it properly, Rick

Going to be really thick but how do you bleed it up properly

I don't know the diesel set-up, so don't know if there are bleed points but one effective way to do it is to 'burp' all of the hoses. Squeeze them and keep the coolant level topped up. On my Bluebird, I remove the rad cap so the air can get out. Raising the front of the car may help, as air always travels upwards. Run the engine and keep squeezing - be careful once the 'stat opens as the hoses will get hot.

Make sure the heater control inside the car is on hot, you don't want air stuck in the heater matrix :thumb2

Europarts sell a 88 degree thermostat with free del for £7.56p, good price but comes without gasket, need to find a source for one!
