Clearly reinstalling something the way it came out doesn't always work :doh

Old stat was installed with a rubber o-ring in the groove around the housing, with the stat on top - no other gasket and it sealed fine.

Put new one in same way and theres leakage.

So does the o-ring go in the groove like that, or is it meant for the stat itself with o-ring (or even paper gasket?) on top?

Educated responses only please :thumbs

Logic says if the o ring is to stop the housing leaking, then there would need to be one each side of the stat. So the o ring is to seal the stat in flow.

So you will need a gasket between the 2 mating surfaces.

the only ones I have seen like that do not use a O ring as such but a U section (on its side) O ring that covers top and bottom edges of the stat, just wonder if you have one of these and mistook it for an ordinary O ring, Rick

Actually Solarman, my outboard stat has that type that sits around the edge, and stays with the stat. Good job too as the stat is vertical, and bits don't float.

I'm with you.....out with the socket set then :thumb2

The old one was defo just underneath, so I guess it sealed itself over time or something

Update you later - thanks guys!
