Finally after 4 months of repairs I'm back on wheels! :) We fitted a new engine with 58K miles, and now I want to fix old one, with 52K.
I got an idea to make a test stand first, to repair and test engine without fitting to the car.

I understand that I will need the following components:

1. ECU
2. Wiring harness from the ECU to all components
3. MAF sensor
4. Turbo not needed
5. Injection pump is already fitted
6. Starter
7. Dashboard (or perhaps I can use OBD computer instead?)
8. The ignition lock, key and immobilizer
9. Acceleration pedal with position sensor
10. Crankshaft position sensor. Because sensor is normally fitted inside hole in gearbox body, I plan just attach it with metal plate above flywheel.

What do you think guys?

Sounds like a plan mate!!!! I think I speak for everyone when I say this one will be closely watched and would benefit from frequent updates and lots and lots of pics :thumb2

My only observation is, that is a lot of work and outlay if you are just rebuilding the one engine.

Most of the hard problems to solve on a car are with the external electrical and electronic components, which you are going to have to source, for the test rig.

As the engine it's self is purely mechanical, and down to clearances, and timing, you should not really need to do all that extra work when just rebuilding it.

Having said that, I look forward to seeing what you do.

Thanks guys. If you read my post here: http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=227489
you will find that I had great problems running that engine - either because of mechanical fault (found 2 glowplug tips broke and fell inside cylinders) or electronic (I ran that engine on vegetable oil and got problems with IP)
As a result, I have 3 Injection pumps which need to be tested and possibly repaired.
So, I think I really need test stand for this purpose :)

What about parts list? Do I need anything else to start the engine?

you will need to down load ECUTALK its free and buy a consult 2 interface OBD wont do sqwat

Thanks for the advise!
I'm not familiar with OBD interface adapters - there are so many of them on the market! Will basic one like that do?

Or I need more complex system including ToughBook laptop, like one of these

You wont need the dashboard for it to run normally ive started and run them without. Also you will need bellhousing for starter to bolt to.Cant see immobiliser being a problem if you have ecu and key etc as matching set

Do you have all necessary components available? ;)
