Hi,

I am designing a winch bumper for my Terrano. Its at the concept stage but I will be putting it out for quotes this week. Its basic but I think it looks ok. Currently, the winch mount plate is bolt on for access and it mounts onto the existing bumper/chassis mounts. My Terrano is the 1996 model with front indicators fixed to the bumper, so I have included tabs for mounting.

Currently designed with tube, but I could make it folded laser cut but that would be more expensive.

Questions,

Does it look good?

Would anyone be interested in having one if the cost is good?

Any feed back welcome.

Thanks

Paul

That looks good but the problem is the front of terranos without a bumper are ugly as sin. Take a look at Alex333 photos and you'll see what I mean. Each to their own obviously but a sheet folded bumper or even the stock bumper cut down, I think, looks better.
I'll see if I can find a photo. :thumb2

Yeah i don't like those style of bumpers on the terranos.

I think the AFN front bumper is one of the best looking t2 bumpers.

I understand your point, but I look at cost more than anything for this. I like the 'A' frame in that picture, in fact the whole bumper looks functional (as it should be).

Based on what you said, I have quickly built another model to see the alternative. This time its folded metal and I can simplify it even more...its growing on me though.

Thanks for giving me another point of view.

The first one that is similar to Alex's as you can see on his vehicle looks awful!!!!!! Alex knows how I feel about his bumpers :lol or should I say bondage bars.

I like the 2nd one, what kind of price do you think they will be? I like the look of the 2nd one

I will tweek it tomorrow and get it priced (the second one). Its heavy at 41kg but I can reduce that with thinner steel and maybe some holes in the under side. With two tow points, I could add holes that will allow you to tie down (bungie straps).

I will get back to you on price.

I took the opportunity of measuring up when I had the bumper off but may need to check some things before issuing final drawings. :)

Everyone has their own opinion and at the end of the day if you like it that's all that matters BUT I don't know of anyone who liked that style of iron railing on Alex's truck. The second drawing is a vast improvement :augie

Question??
Has anyone ever looked into the legality of fitting a steel bumper? The reason why I ask is that I was told by a 4x4 geek that I should have a cover over my winch rollers just in case of an accident. He said I would be held liable if someone was hurt by my rollers, a pedestrian rather than a vehicle. :nenau

I wonder what alex would be liable for if he hit someone with the bondage bar :lol

It raises the question on 'construction and use' regulations, or whatever they are called these days.
On the continent, especially Germany, they have very strict rules on vehicle modification. I think we all think more about vehicle performance, off road ability etc., etc., and perhaps not always about the effects these may have in the event of a 'confrontation', with either a vehicle or person, given that cars are often designed and built with the whole concept of reducing the damage/impact of such an event........:nenau

I know in NZ the "rules" state that crumple zones and airbags must not be affected by an aftermarket bumper.

Also aftermarket bumpers have to be tested for each applicable vehicle - so if I went to get an ARB bumper for another model and fitted it to my T2 then it has to come with a manufactures test cert.

The way around this is to have my T2 certified for the removal of the airbag and build a custom bumper - which is now the plan.

Dave

Can't find the page now as it's been a while but there is EU legislation against frontal protection, however winch bumpers don't fall into it as they are mounts for the winch not bumpers (provided you have a winch fitted).

I know nothing about winching with a terrano but I would be concerned about using standard bumper mounting points with say a 9000lb winch geared through a snatch block :nenau surely it is just going to rip it off.

I can testify to the front chassis mounts perfectly man enough for 13000 Winch and snatch blocked. Assuming you have no rust issues. 😉

I have an original front bumper, slightly modded and has a winch stashed behind it. It uses the original chassis mount points but I have put 6mm steel plates in and I would say it would be strong enough. http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17442 I have a nicer standard is looking front bumper now as the one in the link wasn't so nice.
