Terrano Van Rear Axle

Hello I am new to the forum. I have a 2002 2.7tdi SWB Terrano Van which has an exceptionally noisy rear axle. In a straight line the axle whines under power and is quiet on over run.

When I go round a corner the axle clunks and the whole car jumps slightly. I haved changed the oil and tried Moly Slip out of desperation. I did notice whilst changing the oil several bits of metal on the drain plug magnet so I expect the problem is terminal!!

Can anyone tell me what options I have?

Should I try just changing the diff ( I went to a local breakers and looked at a diff from a 1994 vehicle which looked completely different)

Should I change the complete axle (the terrano is a van and does not have ABS) Will an axle from a car fit? Will the diff ratios be the same?

think youll find been few revisions on engine an drivetrain between 94-02 so gonna need car nearer to your poor beasts age

i think u had one around 96 and another 01 im sure ive read some poor sod had to change g/box and 01 gbox slighly shorter than there older one but it was adaptable with few extra parts! im asuming they changed diff along with g/boxs mines noisy in navara due to flood water down breather!

Ok I have managed to locate a complete axle in a local breakers. (decribed as terrano rear axle '00-'07

Does anybody know if the vans have the same diff ratio as the cars?

Did you make sure the diff oil was LSD oil??

Not sur what year they changed but I have noticed that the later T2's that South Yorkshire Police use have got a different back axle to my early Mav. Mines got the third member (banjo) type of diff where you have to pull both shafts then you can unbolt the entire diff ina carrier, the ones SYP have are more like an atlas on a capri/transit etc where there is a cover plate on the rear of the axle that can be removed to gain access to the diff and the pigs head (carrier) is integral to the axle casing, look abit like the one on the pic of jace's back axle.

wonder if the navara being commercial would have same ratios theres advert i found on ebay guy in cov rebuilding them

Do all terranos have LSDs?

How many have drum brakes on the back?

Have just bought an axle from a 2001 T2. Will let you know if it fits!

Which oil should I use? Last time I used Comma LS80W-90 LSD oil.

That oil will be fine Mike, its an LSD specific oil.
