hi friends need your help
has any one bought the gaskets for the thermostat housing any where recently or know where I might get them
billy

As an alternative...
You can buy gasket sheet, in various thicknesses off ebay, or even halfords.
With a pair of compasses, and a pencil to draw around the housing, or use a sheet of brown paper, and place over the housing and using a grubby finger you will see the outline of the shape. Use that as a template.

Some have used cardboard from cereal packets, having rubbed oil in the surface, but never done that myself.

I have not done any job near there but sure I have heard a tale of caution about cracking a housing when putting in the new gasket? :nenau

Perhaps someone could enlighten?

The plastic housing on the later ones are vulnerable to cracking during replacement. Many people affected have bought a second hand aluminium one from the earlier Td.

Might be worth the precaution of getting an aluminium one, before tackling a plastic one.

So a quick poll..
Who has disturbed a plastic housing and refitted it without a problem, say compared to those who have had to source an aluminium one?

Not long replaced my thermostat & it came with 3 gaskets:D mines got the plastic housing so was careful removing it & when refitting it I tightened down the bolts equal going to each one in turn so not to stress the housing & touch wood it's been fine

when I did mine, initially the gasket failed. SO I made one. That failed too, so I bought some RED gasket maker for high temp applications (listed thermostat housing) and used that, problem solved.

Just a thought.

hi

Its the housing gaskets I need
not the thermostat housing cap gasket
the cap housing is the one with the 3 bolt holes and can be plastic or alloy the top radiator hose goes onto it
the housing is the part that fits onto the engine and the cap fixes onto it
its alloy in construction
I will possible have to make the gaskets thanks

yes, I had to do that part as well, but I used red gasket sealant. I wasn't prepared to take a chance with a paper gasket, the red sealant is superb. :thumbs

on all of these areas you are best off with gasket in a tube, what I do if in doubt is apply sealant, fit to job, leave a couple of hours to stiffen, then fully tighten, I use this method my 1975 Lister air cooled twin on the rocker covers, they are notorious for leaking, but this method sorts it no problem, Rick

That's clever, so sealant, semi tight, leave for several hours, then tighten right up? :thumb2

thanks

hi friends
will likely go the instant gasket high temp way if no information comes about where I can get the gaskets
thermostat housing holding with 2 bolts at present no leaks
waiting on the full housing bought from ebay says it will be tomorrow
