Right then heres the story.
Bought a terrano 2.7 tdi 1998(s) It has a problem and ew bought it like this.
It starts fine, ticks over fine, drives fine but, it has no power and will not rev past 2k ish. Slight blue smoke but nothing major.

Now then here is the other bit of the problem, every man and his dog has had a go at fixing it.:nenau

Had diagnostics guy to it today and he says the needle lift thingy( my words) on injector 1 could be at fault, as it seems to be a fuel problem, and also thinks its had a replacement engine.!!!???!!

Any ideas, does this sound right or should i be looking elsewhere.??

I have seen somewhere that the engine management does this if a component has failed, so check the manual, Rick

could be the MAF, this can cause complete loss of power, regards bri

Is there a way to check the MAF.??

Also why would the diagnostic show up the needle lift sensor.??

RE needle lift sensor, the No 1 injector sends a signal back to the ECU, so if the signal is not received the managment flags an error but I do not think that no injector signal will command the unit to go into limp home mode, just be a performance loss, MAF not sure as I have a petrol, worth pulling the plug on it and trying it up the road, Rick

Do you have the Hitachi or the other one, if you have the Hitachi I can give you the resistance readings on the three wires, might just identify if yours is OK or not, Rick

hitachi maf, thats what i have. when mine went, i just cleaned it (i now have two mafs, one spare) and the error code never came back BUT i never had the issues you report-no power over 2k.

i had to do my needle lift sensor, a combination of issues caused me similar problems to yours, i.e. limp home mode. symptoms for me where stalling, no power, MIL on, bit of smoke but not much etc etc. my fix for this particualr issues was new No1 injector and new CKP sensor (BRAND NEW CKP, pointless trying used ones). so what I had here was failing ckp, so timing for fuel injection was out coupled with a faulty No1 injector sensors (the needle was crusted brown). once i sorted those i could start first time every time, no loss of power, no limp home mode, just the usual puff of smoke sometimes and eveything works fine apart from i have a weird idle thing going on but other than that no probs...

what diagnostics did you have done? what i mean is, did they simply plug into the diag plud under the dash, or use some other method? personally, id clear the codes, and go for a 5/10 mile drive (if you can) to flag up any new issues-get the engine to warm otherwise things like CKP errors may not come into effect...

thanks for the replys guys.

Not sure on the diagnostics, was done when i was at work. I do have the light up on the dash, It starts first time and ticks over fine. Just have to plan your trip with no hills !!!:D

Whats ckp ??

then id check the diags yourself, its VERY easy, and at least clear the MIL light to see what codes re occur-you may have old codes on there...

as for the CKP, its the Crankshaft Position sensor. it has many responsibilities including engine timing-fuel injection. if its faulty, it will most certainly affect the driving as the ECU has to then use crappy pre defined settings for timing etc whihc may not be right for the conditions in which you are driving, hence the poor power. When mine was faulty, i could always start, and drive, but it was poor on power, i got stalling randomly and all this only EVER happened when the engine was warm, so i could drive 10-15 miles no problem before the ckp began failing.

the problem is that the older they get, they lose their magnetism (as far as i understand it, im not very technical), and heat affects this, so what happens is the engien gets hot, the magnet in the CKP cant read the position of the crankshaft properly thus sends incorrect signal to ecu thus screwing up the fuel injection, timing etc etc...

not saying this IS your fault, but i am saying keep it in mind because youd be surprised how much of the engine the CKP can affect, as i found out. CKP is approx £190-£220 from Nissan-you can only buy direct. i know, very expensive. I tried THREE used ones, and they ALL had the same issue-OLD and useless, but as soon as I fitted the new one it was spot on and has been ever since.

here you go, found this explains everything nicely;

the bottom of the page sounds like your issue?

my mil light came on and there was no loss of power, or so i thought, fitted new injector and it's a unbelievable the difference it made, £150 & euro parts, starts instantly and sounds crisper and pulls 10 times better than before. :thumb2

Wooo hooo.

New No1 injector with lift sensor fitted today and hey presto FIXED :D:D

Nearly died at the price, just over £220 inc vat

i know dear innit, mine cost me £190 (i just said i knew another guy who wanted one, so they gave me discount)

amazing the different that one injector makes tho!
