Hi Guys,

I've been running an 2002 Nissan Terrano II, 3 ltr since 2008 and she's been absolutely brilliant. I checked my oil level yesterday; something I very rarely do, as she uses none. To my horror, very little oil was observed on the dipstick.

I took her to my local 4x4 garage for advice. I had previously noted no obvious oil loss. My mechanic pulled off intercooler hoses and found oil in them. He seems to think that this points to the turbo failing. I have noticed no loss of power.

Is there any other fault that could cause this?

Your expert advice would be truly welcome.

Jon

You should check your oil regularly, all engines will use/burn some oil, if you don't check it for months on end and you use it a lot, then your oil level will have dropped.
The sump can leak on these, so worth checking.
As for oil in the pipework, not sure on that one, depends on how much is in there I would have thought.

TBH you really need to monitor how much oil it's using every week-month but the 2 things that spring to mind are the turbo but your mechanic should have found play on the shaft bearings or the oil breather system. I had a lot of issues on my last 2.7TDI with oil in the intercooler but tracked it down to the breather tank which has a valve in it, it must have stuck & oil was getting drawn into the induction system just before the turbo making it look as if the turbo had gone:doh fitted an oil catch tank prob solved but not sure if the 3L uses the same sort of set up

Many thanks for the advice. On my mechanic's advice, I topped up the oil and am monitoring. Will check turbo etc.

yea deffo check the blow-by control valve, they get stuck and then the oil just goes all over the place and its always the last thing you check :lol

this is the bugger here

Yes i agree with that, mine did that and i fitted an oil collection tank

Guys. Many thanks for the ongoing advice. I hope not to have to purchase a new turbo.
