As far as I have read, on the Terrano there seems to be 2 types of remote control, and 2 types of NATS chip.

Can someone fill in the blanks?

As far as the remote goes, it can be either 433.92 MHz or 418 Mhz

Do these seem to be related to year? Does the remote look different?

A new remote can be relativity easily programmed to the car with out any special tools/software

Then there is the NATS chip.
This is a tiny chip embedded in the bottom part of the key and is different colours

What do the colours mean?
Can a different chip of the correct colour be added to the car NATS system easily, or do you need special equipment?

What do the colours mean? Not Sure, but a new chip would need programming by auto locksmith or Nissan etc

In the old days you used to get a master key & 2 regular keys with a new car, I dont know if this still applies to some makes.

Clive,

With my VERY limited knowledge, the immobilized chips in the key part are green or blue, mine on a 2002 3ltr is blue.
The techie at Timpsons read this chip and his machine came out with a result.....which I failed to make a note of....:doh

However, if you have a unit near you that does this auto key work (they all don't....in Swansea only one unit specialises in auto key work) then they could 'read' your key and at least give you that information, how you then translate it into 'usefulness' to you is the next question.....:nenau

John

My wife has only 1 key for her 08 plate focus.
In our local Sainsbury there is a key cutting shop and I inquired about a copied blade so i could at least unlock the car.
The chap told me I could have a copy that would unlock (manually) and start it for £45!

Just thought I'd share that nugget of info with you all :lol

Timpsons quoted £140.00 for flip key cut and chipped for mine.......

So, does that mean the chip is programmed for the car, or the car is programmed for the chip?

I think they just would have used the information to reprogrammed the key/chipset.....:nenau
A bit too rich for my pocket at the moment....hence the faffing around....which could end up costing the same....just the long way around.....:nenau

Anyway, I have tried attaching a picture of my key fob....

That's the same as the ones on both of our cars, only I converted them to flip keys a couple of years ago.

Rick,
Does the key fob I have, look like it would hold the 433 chipset you have....?

So, does that mean the chip is programmed for the car, or the car is programmed for the chip?

the way I understand it each key chip is unique and the car is programmed to accept up to 4 different keys, Rick

No would not work mine is NATS 2 yours is later NATS 3 or greater so is not just shape that matters but the intelligence of the chippery, Rick

I would not be quite so sure about that. the key just sends a signal to the car receiver, that then issues the commands, the NATS is all on the car, the Chip in the key is just an identifier. So in theory provided you have original chip and the right frequency transponder the key should work.

What we need to confirm is someone with access to a newer model & an older model but obviously operating on the same frequency to give it a try.

Think you could be right, I will send my 433 fob (no key, no chip, older oval type) to Johnb and let him try it out, it should let him lock and unlock the motor remotely, if it does not work he can just send it back, Rick

You see......there is some light at the end of the tunnel......:thumb2

Well RF actually, but it's all part of the spectrum.......

Rick, thank you, there will be a delay in reporting back, until I return.....:bow
