Hi guys can anyone help please?
My Terrano has started to suffer from power loss, my initial thought was fuel starvation so I checked the mini filter which was clean and changed the fuel filter, this didn't seem to make any difference.
However whilst I was driving I noticed that my boost gauge didn't seem to be moving so I checked the turbo for obvious faults and apart from a little oil all seemed ok but I did notice oil on the underside of the inter cooler, so I took it off and it had a fair bit of oil on it, although I couldn't see where it had come from.
My question is if the inter cooler was leaking would this cause the symptoms of serious power loss and the turbo not ganing any pressure?
And also does any body have be for sale?
Any help much appreciated

Severe power loss that suddenly just appears but is restored by stopping and restarting?

Mass Air flow sensor. Give it a clean in carb solvent. May fix it for a while.

Oil in the intercooler does not sound good.I would suspect turbo failing if there is a lot of it.I have never had a turbo fail but oil loss can be a symptom.

for your inter-cooler to be responsible for dramatic power loss it would need a gaping hole, not just a bit of oil leak, remove the cooler and rev the engine putting your hand over the outlet from the turbo, you should feel a good pressure similar to the exhaust of the old style cylinder vacuum cleaners, if not then your turbo is suspect, Rick

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
I have to say there did seem to be quite a bit of oil in the turbo inlet and out let
What sort of money are we looking at for a turbo?
What are you asking for yours Rik?
Is it a relatively easy job to do, to replace the turbo, are there any need for any special tools etc?
Thanks for your help

it is quite normal for oil residue in the inter-cooler so this in itself is not an indication of turbo failure, do the test I said to prove it, if it passes the test then check the hoses for tightness etc and also your boost gauge, Rick

Hi Rik, I have left it at my daughters in York for now, I will have to get back over to do the test.
Worse case sinario what are we looking at for a turbo and what kind of a task is it to do?

Many thanks

Have sent PM, as for the job it is not too bad, bit fiddly with a couple of hard to access nuts, there are oil and water pipes that at first you may not see, and a support bracket deep under the turbo, worst problem is sheering a bolt or two, so have plenty of easing spray about and once you crack a nut, if it is at all stiff, plenty of spray and work it back and forth, it is well worth the time to do this as it is far easier than having to drill it out and re threading, Rick

no no no

Please people if reading this do not use carb cleaner on the Maf, electrical cleaner is best give it a good blast leave to dry if you don't have an air line to dry it with.

Apart from the turbo or inter cooler what else could be a problem?
What symptoms would a failing or failed MAF be?
Is there any way I can check if the MAF is or isn't working?

I think if you unplug the maf and the problem gets worse then the maf is OK.

If there is no difference then it "could" be the maf.

I suffered loss of power going up hills, cleaned the maf and it got better, then changed the air filter and back to normal.

There is a download for checking the maf. Tells you what voltages to expect etc.

check waste gate on the turbo, might have got stuck open and that will give you power loss

How do I check it?
If it is stuck what do I do?
How do I free it off?

Oik the circlip off the waste gate actuator and give it a wiggle. It should be free and loose . You'll be able to hear it slap closed ;)

Don't loose the clip :lol
They have a desire to go walk about :freak3:
