no i don't use it for towing, but it has got a tow bar and was used for towing a tin tent before i got it, my mpg varies from 30 - 36 mpg depending on driving conditions and how heavey my foot is at the time lol

Do you use yours for towing Steve?

What mpg do you get?

Tim the things to bear in mind with the auto box are firstly, mpg is as good as, if not better, than the manual because it is more highly geared. Manual does 3800rpm at 90mph while the auto is only doing 3000rpm.

Secondly, not sure if they did the 3.0 as an auto or not? Auto boxes are always a problem on big diesels because of the massive torque involved compared to a petrol engine, which is why you don't see a lot of manufacturers doing them these days.

Thirdly, the towing weight on the 2.7 auto is about a tonne less than the manual....1750kgs I think compared to 2800.

Wow thats a huge diference! No good to me as my racecar and trailer are 1800kg+.

Thanks for the advice. Are those stats fact?

Check the plate in the engine bay, it has all the weights on it, Rick

Utterly.:bow

I speak as one who once trashed an auto box after doing two high-speed 2000-mile round trips on the trot to south of France with a VERY HEAVILY loaded twin axle box trailer...cost me £1500 for a rebuild :augie

Just checked autotrader stats on the auto.... 1700kgs!

Must be quite a weak auto box then? A freind of mine transports cars for a living an uses a Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 Auto lwb AUTO and he has done 177,000 miles so far without issue. ALL those miles towing!

You checked Autotrader? After consulting the Priests of the Inner Sanctum?? :lol:lol

Ok all fixed.

Clonking turned out to be very worn outer CV joints.

So, generally worn CV joints would sound like a clicking noise, usually on lock moving slow enough to hear it. I have diagnosed MANY over my lifetime. The diference with this, hence my request for info, was that,
1: Im not familiar with the 4wd transfer mechanics so thought it may be something specific
2: The 'clonking' as opposed to the usual clicking noise, was not characteristic of a cv joint, and these were REALLY clonking!

So 2 new CV joints and the Terrano is good as new. Transformation.

CV joints were £84 each, and took me circa 4 hours to fit both.

Job done :thumb2

Now I got to decide wether to keep it or not! If anyone is interested let me know and I'll post pics and info, wouldnt mind a cheaper Terrano (VERY impressed with this one) wouldnt mind trying an Auto.

Was wondering wether i have the same problem, very bad clonking but not all time and dosen't seem to matter if turning or not. Have disconnected front prop and can feel some movement in cv joints but also play in diff. Can go out in truck and seem ok the pull up outside house and clonk! Another time can't get it to do it then others happens quite a bit. Done 137k now so may be outer cv's, did have them apart about 10k ago to replace cv boots.Where did you get cv's from? been quoted £24.00 each for outers can't get inner ones but not sure of the quality, (jandrcvjoints.co.uk) Would be interested to know please.
