Terrano 2 Kryptonite - The Crankshaft Sensor!

Nissan Terrano 2 , Y reg , auto 2.7 tdi se+

I joined ages ago but only just now have put pen to paper on this great forum!

I love far east cars, always have and always will.

I am Nissan/Japanese car born and bred as much of my childhood and early adult life was working in a garage that specialized in Nissan body repairs and thats where I caught the "far east" car bug.......I even remember a rare Terrano 1 (import probably) in the garage.

The Terrano 2, if I was to critique it I would say that the engine is bullet proof but the luxuries,creature comforts were probably an afterthought (feels like Suzuki quality inside) . Its rival the Mitsubishi Shogun probably was better thought out although I cant vouch for the "bullet proof" engine status in the Shogun.

I have driven almost every turbo nissan has released in the UK at some point in my life, starting with the Cherry Turbo way back in the day.

Like most people I bought my Terrano 2 due to a need of practicality and a want of something different so the nissan was a natural choice , although oddly it drinks like fish during the winter.

There were problems from the beginning with the Terrano with the worst being the engine light followed by random power cuts. This turned out to the crankshaft sensor but to this day nobody knows where the F*** its located (I think its just under the fan on the engine block).

Add to this that there was a change of model around 2001/2002 plus that Nissan parts department dont give a S***/clueless and then the problem of getting the correct part becomes magnified.

So if anybody can help please let me know!

Try at the back of the engine, think it's located there on the later trucks. Early ones were at the front but around 2000 they moved it for some reason.

re CHERRY TURBO : Im actually chuffed somebody knows what Im talking about and this was defo the nissan and not the alfa europe version!

Isn't this the sensor going into the gearbox. I thought mine was damaged when my clutch went... Might be mistaken though.

I used to work at dealers many years ago so knew the models well, it was an N12 E15T. Never drove one but I really would of loved to. As for the alfa half breed, hated them.

I've heard of people using sensors from another brand, there will be some posts if you wade through them.
 
Depends on what fuel pump you have, Bosch and it will be at the back of the head on top of the bell housing, Zexel will be at the top of the timing gear cover at the front, check your Maf if Bosch = Bosch,, Hitachi = Zexel, Rick

Cheers mate :thumb2, I will start on the detective work asap , please excuse my ignorance but I dont know what Maf stands for ?
I assume by checking the "Maf" it will reveal whether its Bosch or Hitachi/Zexel?

The MAF is the mass airflow sensor.
Located on the pipe work next to the air filter box.
It's a sensor screwed on top with either Bosch or Hitachi stamped on it:thumb2
 
Looks like elty and solarman have set me straight!

Passion + knowledge go a long way.

Now to investigate (wade as Jim put it) this Audi sensor "get around".

looked at the MAF and found sensor which turns out to be a HITACHI.
So this has narrowed down the detective work nicely.
I,ll post some pictures just in case anyone is interested/has the same problem.

Audi A3 sensor is same (fraction of the Nissan price) but a little longer so you just need a spacer washer (about 4mm I think) also you will need to cut the plug off your old sensor and join it to the new one, three wires but one is just a screen the other two are the ones you want, does not matter which way round, Rick

I also see (from my research on the forum of previous posts) that you may be able to supply some special washers for this conversion?
