Terrano 2.7tdi (2004) LWB Rear propshaft annoyance!

Hello...please be gentle with me - I'm not at all mechanically-minded or skilled.

I'm having a problem with Eric, my 2.7tdi Sport, and I'm not sure if the mechanic I've been using is taking the piss

A few weeks ago, a hideous squealing, screeching squeak noise suddenly started coming from (I thought) the rear nearside wheel. There was also a creaky/rubbery noise from the same area when reversing or turning. I presumed this was maybe a wheel bearing, and when I took it into the garage, the first mechanic who had a quick look said it was a wheel bush, but on further inspection said it was the rear propshaft. I've since had a new UJ fitted, and the propshaft stripped, cleaned and greased etc. There was apparently some other 'part' fitted, but I'm not sure what it was.

Anyway, £200 later, it is still squealing/screeching :-( The creaking/rubbery noise has gone and it only makes the squeal after about 10-15 from cold, but it remains from there on in.

Anyone got any ideas?

When you had the work done did they strip down the rear brakes

No - I don't think they stripped the brakes down. Mechanic is now being very arsey and saying he's doing things as cheaply as possible, and that's why it probably isn't resolved.

Not a lot of point if it isn't actually fixing it!! I'm certainly not aware that he's particularly cheap! :banghead

Rear diff oil, when was it last changed? special LSD oil Rick

I am with solarman change the rear differential oil, cost is low and it makes a huge difference (even my wife can tell !!). Symptoms are creaking and banging in reverse and to a lesser extent when turning going forwards at low speed.
I seem to have to do mine every 25,000 miles or so, what comes out is the colour of strong coffee and what goes in is straw coloured.
Just ensure it says GL5 75W90 or 80W90 LS (limited slip) oil on the packaging. In a 2004 vehicle you should need 1.2L so it will cost around £12-£15 for 2L. Very easy job you don't even need to raise the vehicle. Just ensure you clean round the plugs before you remove them and remove the filler plug first as it is not unknown to remove the drain plug and not be able to budge the filler plug.
Go on give it a go get your hands dirty the club members will give you lots of advice.

Use another garage-mechanics should know what they are doing rather than using you and your car to learn. Anyway, as above, red diff oil worth changing asit seems to be heat rrelated-cars rear wheel drive and the rear LSD is always in use.

yep , I agree with my learned collegues ...... change the diff oil , use comma lsd oil , that seems to be the best ,it comes in a red bottle , 1 litre size , you will need a few , also don't use 4wd on a hard surface :thumb2

I hadn't thought of an oil change (I'm a completely un-mechanically minded nurse!), but will give it a go, if I can work our how!!

The creaking/squeaking in reverse is exactly what I fist noticed, before the squealing started, so it sounds likely that's the problem.

I'm giving up on that particular mechanic...really don't think he knows his onions (or Nissans for that matter!)

Sadly, when it comes to hands-on mechanical stuff, I'm less than wonderful...how do I actually change the oil? Do you know where I could find a diagram/idiot guide? :doh

If Livingston Autoparts is near you, just go in and ask for 3 botttles of 'LS80W901L'. Can't see that setting you back more than £20.

1/2 Drive ratchet to drain and fill but the plugs will probably be brutally tight.
Probably already been said but DO NOT drain until you've removed the fill plug.
The plugs are taper fit so don't need to be butchered back in.
The oil bottles come with a fill straw in them so you just squeeze them in.
If you get stuck give me a shout. I'm back at work from Monday but away for the weekend. Let me know which garage you took it to. It wasn't the one I work at anyway!

I will get out to Livi Autoparts this week and get some oil.

The garage I used was EMG Autos in Edinburgh (Saughton). He seems great with bog-standars cars, but less so with 4x4s.

What garage do you work at? I'm looking for a new one, pref in West Lothian.

If you want me to change the oil outwith work it will save you about £48 as they'll probably charge you about £40+ the vat for the hour.
I could easily meet you somewhere in Livingston after work to change the oil as it will take all of about 20mins.
Just PM me if you want to do this with an idea of where you'd want to meet.
I finish at half five on a week day.

If you wanted to come down to where my work is in Livingston I could do it in my lunch hour in the shared car park which would be even better for me.
I normally get lunch between 12pm and 1pm.
