I've bought and old 1998 Terrano to tow a trailer. Pretty sound condition but wouldn't pull your hat off. My brother and I changed the MAF sensor (bosch) with one off his 52 registered Terrano and whoaaaa its runs like a rocket. I ordered a MAF off ebay. It arrived this morning and I've fitted it assuming that in 10mins I'd be flying. Took it for a drive and it went like a rocket for 30 seconds and then the engine management light (EML) comes on and we're back to driving at the speed of a snail again. Further on the test drive the EML goes off and we're flying again but it only lasts a few seconds before the EML comes back on and turbo slug is back again. It does this a couple more times and settles down with the EML on and no performance. Any ideas? Brother lives too far away to go over & try his MAF on my Terrano and my MAF on his to see what happens. I'm also a bit concerned about putting the EML on his and not being able to get it off again. I don't want to end up with two Terrano 2's that wouldn't pull me out of bed!!!

All sensible suggestions welcomed.

well as the maf is an airflow sensor i'd be checking all air filters and air intakes i may be wrong but cant hurt to check

well, thats either a faulty MAF (not unheard of) or an issue with the air flow. it could be that you had c rap on the gauge before the MAF, or even in the filter housing, and the act of it pulling better has sucked more crap onto the MAF causing a bad reading. As you suggest, ideally you would test it with your brothers to figure out if its a faulty maf unit or not. Is the one from ebay definately new?

Pull codes, but also:

Either a faulty MAF or a broken wire in the harness (where it is clipped around back of engine)

Get a DVM hooked up and check the output (pin3)

idle - just under or around 1v

Full throttle 2500rpm upwards 4.3+v

Smooth transition between these points.

Pin 1 - 5v
Pin 2 - 0v.
