Terrano 2.4 starts and runs great.
But every now and then ( 3 times so far ) it will start but then die.
Start and die about 4 or 5 times.

Wont get up to idle speed.

Then starts fine and runs fine like nothing happened.
Will then restart 10 times in a row fine

Only happened when engine warm . And lots of stopping and starting driving before hand

Any ideas??

I had a 2.4 for some time but never had that problem, I would be checking the vac hoses, cold start solenoid on the throttle body, and the MAF and possibly the cold throttle regulator, (holds the throttle open a little when cold, also does the same when power steering is put on load, so easy way to check) Rick

Also when was the fuel filter last changed? it is on the chassis between front and rear doors, Rick

Fuel starvation ?

Sounds like a fueling issue as Rick has said start with the fuel filter then look at perhaps the fuel pump. THen look for daft things like a loose inlet manifold.

Also why would be only if I've done lots of small journeys ??

Any links where to get a fuel relay ?
Which one is the fuel relay ?

And the best place to get the fuel filter ?

Many years ago when I had the 2.4 petrol I had similar issues which turned out to be a stuck egr valve.
I removed it and soaked it in penetrating oil over night which seemed to do the trick.

I would start with the fuel filter, it is so out of the way it may never have been changed, your local motor factors will be able to supply, do not get misled with the fuel pump, it only runs for a few seconds on turning on the ignition, once the engine is running the pump stays on, this is controlled by the ECU, there is a relay but cannot tell you which one it is, but doubt it is that as after standing there will be no pressure in the fuel rail for it to fire, so needs the pump to run before starting, listen at the tank for pump running for a couple of seconds when first turning on ignition, if it runs relay is fine if not relay bad or intermittent, Rick

Thanks everyone for the info.

I've got a fuel filter on the way.( Japanese pattern part for £8)
And a second hand relay £12

It's a green one apparently part number 25230-c9965

I'll try them 1st.

This sounds daft but if the fuel filter is really badly blocked then when the pressure falls away some of the dirt falls away allowing fuel through.

On short journeys the fuel consumption and the flow is thus higher so dirt quicly blocks up the filter again.

My Mum's old Micra developed a similar fault where it would keep stalling - being an automatic it was quite dangerous. I did the plugs, plug leads (£25 spent), and lastly the in line filter (£5 spent) - sorted should have started at the cheap end first..

Fuel filter looks old

Fit it anyway, it will still be miles better than your old one, Rick

I've had 2 from two different places and the are both smaller than the original
