Hi all, as you know im now straight veg with a splash of petrol,

this morning it was bang on 0 degrees.

the truck starts up fine, when idling for the first few minutes though I can hear what can only be described as a "stutter" every now and again, to me this is saying that the mix is too thick, and until heat gets to the engine it does this.

I must add that she still runs perfectly when cold, just sitting on idle.

After some research and looking for an oil based thinner to thin out the veg and not remove lubrication from the internals we had a great idea at my work...

Why not mix up a bit of new/used engine oil with the petrol (that then gets mixed with the veg) that way the petrol is still a lubricant mixing with the veg.

I suppose the negative is that the truck might smoke a tad? :nenau

What do you chaps reckon? :naughty

do not use used engine oil as micro metal particles will damage engine over time.
if you use new engine oil you will be breaking the law.
i am a wvo user and regularly use rug upto 20% and 2 stroke oil at 0.01 mix,tax is paid on 2 stroke oil so legal.
done 10s of thousands of miles with out engine problems, not even oil mixing in sump.
just my 2 pennyworth.

Yeh stick some 2 stroke in there :thumb2

I mix some with my diesel at a ratio of 200:1 (oil:diesel). I'm convinced it makes her run a bit smoother - it's meant to help the engine burn cleaner and can possibly up your MPG slightly (not sure about that one but may have bumped it up a notch or two)

sooo, why is new engine oil not legal? as no duty is paid on it?

secondly how can they tell if its used or new?

so bearing in mind i am not using any diesel you think a bit of 2 stoke with the petrol and the veg will help lubricate a bit better?

so for example if i use:

20L of veg
3.8/4L of petrol
2 stroke oil ??

thanks

when i was a lad many years ago i got myself a brand new bsa bantam,1968,£175.00,worked 3 jobs to save up for it i was 16 then then ordered it from bsa agent near me.
i used to make my own fuel as a show off at traffic lights etc against honda cb etc.above 175cc.
people could not believe or under stand how i pissed them off being i was 17 stone with black panther rear shocks on,so i could carry a passenger without bottoming the shoke, but i did regularly.
anyway the fuel i made was for my model engines.
pure methanol with caster oil mixed in,now it never seized my model engines up and it never broke my bsa, just made it into a dragster.
the same applies to wvo,wvo has more lub than derv, rug thins it twice as much as derv so in reality wvo and rug is not a problem, you can run long term at upto 30% rug without a problem, that takes the gel point to below -15 so that covers all of the uk,manufactures of engines recommend some in cold weather.so if you are worried just put some 2 stroke in,but its not cheap.

so just a bit more unleaded needed really as she was coughin a tad this morning, like i said - running fine but coughing lightly.

All I am worried about is the petrol de-lubing the engine.

Thus i thought when i get the chance could bung a bit of new engine oil in

Be careful using engine oil!!!! Apart from the legalities watch out for "coking" have a read

perhaps i will avoid all together. coking even with new?

mabye a dap of 2 stroke is the way :thumb2

Yup, new and old and you will start coking your injectors which aren't cheap

I've also been doing a little research around the 2 stroke oil as well, it does provide extra lubrication but is pretty much pointless as Veg Oil is way more lubricating than Diesel anyway, the best thing you can do mate is stick to the best Veg/Diesel mix you can get away with at the temperatures :)

secondly how can they tell if its used or new?

Like has been said, go with the 2 stroke :thumbs... but in answer to your question above... I would imagine new would be straight out a new bottle/can/drum and used wouldn't be (sorry bud, couldn't resist :p) it would also likely be noticeably dirtier :nenau

Haha dude. The reason i was so keen is because we have hundreds of litres a week sitting in our garage you see. Would have been free fuel all together :D
