Power poser time:nenau
My truck is a bit broken at the mo and and I'm just thinking about future mods while it's getting better!:sly
Can I get more power from a standard TD with say modded turbo after market I/C and tweaked pump..............
OR
Stay with the TDi and modded turbo, tuned exhaust and some sort of ECU trickery:nenau
I've touched on this before but not really come to a definative answer.......DISCUSS

one in boot?

believe chevy 350s respond quite well too.

seriously though what sort of output are you looking for?

TD with 12mm plungers in the pump, big nozzles, a GT2056, and a a decent FMIC + 3l clutch, invariably ARP headbolts a decent HG / wire ringed block and probably machined pistons to drop the CR abit.

I think at that level I would be changing to a Bosch VE pump though, as parts are much easier to get to build up a decent hybrid, and they are so much more easily tunable.

Although you might say, why use a 25yr old IDI engine, which is going to be fragile at 200 ponies, where you could drop-in the far superior 16v 3litre motor, with custom mapping, bigger turbo, FMIC etc and have an easy 200+bhp out the box??

My gut instinct is that the TDI will be most flexible. I reckon the TD has got to be the most reliable as it don't have the electronics but as standard lacks power.

OK let me qualify this a little more:augie
I may be rebuilding the TDi and will take the opportunity to tweak the existing engine for cheapness. So wondered about the use of an aftermarket ECU (cause mine's the zexel one:doh and not remappable.)Fit my modded intake turbo, add the LPG I've got for it and trick out the manifold and downpipe and exhaust.
OR buy a cheap TD truck and tweak that engine.
I like the idea of the 3.0 ltr swap but doubt I could afford the engine in the first place:doh
I'd like to get near the 200 bhp as cheaply as possible, surprise, surprise :D

PS so far I've had no probs with the electronics off road in deep water etc ;)

What happened to the motor?

er
well
er
"Landed badly" :augie
Chassis/bottom wishbone or other non identified bentness causing directional instability and odd shaped wings and radiator closing in on waterpump etc etc :doh
So while straightening is not an option we think at the mo I'm looking to do a lot of the mods I had lined up already BUT could spend the time doing them on an older unit.
Not a lot of cash for ultimate tune but want to go down the "bolt on" route as much as poss.
So leave the lump as is but tweak anything else that I can undo and sort:naughty

fit the 2.8 patrol engine, that will give you some grunt, although you might have to lengthen the bonnet a little, but could be done. as for the 3.0 lt engine, it seems a bit unreliable when i looked it up, as i was looking to buy one. :thumb2

My engine is fine (appart from the rad :augie it didn't appreciate the front crossmember moving backwards :doh)
If was to change the engine then might as well go V8 in some way :naughty
I just fancy tuning the standard lump in a bolt on way; like I said modify inlet mani, exhaust mani and turbo downpipe, Big exhaust done, T28 turbo here, LPG here, New ECU of some sort to boost the std fuel pump to the max, poss turbo boost controller.
Is there any appreciable power gain in porting and flowing the head?(Sorry petrol head) dont know if it's any good on deisel:nenau
Contensious one, how about some small supercharger to boost before the turbo comes in? I've seen some german cars done that way:naughty

i think if i was in your position now. id be looking at troll running gear an chassis. engine too if you like . and strap your body to it. look here http://completed.shop.ebay.co.uk/Ca...cles_CarParts_SM&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282

should show competed stuff.
ring some of the ones that are in budget and did not sell. and do a deal , if i had 3-400 id be getting something to play with .... ultimate steering fix and lift the sky' s the limit.

honestly cant see why your fixing your chassis

If You Want the POWER and reilablilty and everything Its got to be a 4.2 Petroll, they are stupidly quick so long as you can feed it fuel.

Well I did think about a live axle job :sly
That way no need to sort the chassis :augie
Thing is I do like the idea of this plucky little T2 pissin' off the more rugged off roaders :lol
I'm not fixing the chassis either, anoyingly the damage is very small in dimension terms but the end result is the drivers wheel is about 6-10mm further back. So it could be a combination of things we just cant see the fault at the mo:nenau

Play tug of war with a lorry.! :augie :thumbs

it will be the t2 by looks just sat on a corking trol chassis with all the nice trol benefits and light and small t2 body
