TD42 - Turbo Conversion

Hi Folks,

Lets call it a "stage 2" Td42 turbo conversion.

Over the next few weeks my mates shop is going to do the conversion for me, its nothing out of the ordinary but it should produce some fun results.

Parts list:
TD05 - custom turbo and oil lines/fitting etc
High mount exhaust manifold
4" snorkel
Custom Airbox, inline pod filter
3"exhaust
Large Inter cooler kit - front mount
Modified injectors
12mm custom fuel pump
HD clutch
All the gauges
Oil catch can.
Modified intake manifold.
Lift pump
Ceramic coating to parts.
Dyno Tuned

Aim is between 110kw to 130kw - 140hp to 175hp - on 35"s with standard diff gears (for now at least)

I will be doing some of the spanner work but the intention on this one was to get a nice td42 and help my mates shop out when times are slow.

This wont be the full diy thread that we all love, apologies in advance for that.

Turbo Choice

I found choosing a turbo quite frustrating, the variance of turbos, kits, hearsay, opinions and just general crap info on the web it gets a bit tedious after a while and then you realise go see some educated folks about the work they do.

so off to see some diesel tuning specialist around nz and discussions ensure about what/why/how much....

The original Td05 is held in high regard, so is the Holeset hx30 the garret GT28 series - these appear to be the top 3 used in nz at the minute. There are the cheaper turbos but i want to do the right the first time, so i saved a bit harder.

So once we narrow down the power level and the budget things start to take shape.

I wanted a turbo/pump/injector kit that had been used together with success.

So if you fancy finding out more about the turbo kit check out "Kaiapoi Repowers" in NZ, their facebook has a lot of info on the turbo development.

I have purchased their TD0X-TDA turbo, their 12mm pump and injectors to suit.

Cheers bud, funny you should ask, on its way is a GFB D-force boost controller which should allow me to run a few tunes (6 i believe). Not something I've used before but comes highly recommended by the turbo/pump supplier so while in Rome eh....I'm just going to play it by ear but i imagine a daily driver setting will be a comfy 15psi.
Ive only ever been in a few running 10psi and standard pump.wheels etc, so i'm hoping to achieve that same "feel" but on a truck with more bulk and not have to ring the neck out the components.

Thank you. I certainly will, the intention is i do the nuts a bolts and they do the fabrication and fancy bits. Also hope to be able to see the dyno stuff.

Update

First bit of work - gotta clean the engine bay!!!

Second - remove gear box and send it for health check/refresh, install the new clutch.

I'll report back when we get onto the clutch install.

all parts $12,895
A weeks labour - $3,000
15% gst (VAT) - $1,935

All up $17,830 nzd - in GBP thats roughly half at the minute so say 8,900 in your money.

I have an excel sheet pricing the whole thing with 4 different suppliers, if you want to see that let me know.

you're right there, as we know they like to get hot, mine has been good to me so far. As long as i dont get silly with the fuel
