from what i know its manual adjustment on the tappets for the 2.7 no matter what age the car:thumbs

No it's an OHV (over head valve) engine like the old Mini's & 1300 Escorts etc. Here's the how to http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/downloads/workshop/wk5.pdf

The only difference is you have to remove the intercooler 1st so you can take off the rocker cover. It's not a hard job & easily done in an hour taking your time but once the intercooler is off cover the the pipes with a pair of rubber gloves etc so noting gets into the turbo or inlet pipes:thumbs

If your motor is over 100k miles then likely feelers will not work, the rockers will have worn valve stem indents, the way to do it is turn screw till it touches valve and back off quarter turn, Rick

Feeler gauges didnt work with mine had to adjust them by sight and feel very quiet now..

Worn Tappets

IN the 60's S.P.Q.R. tools (Specialist Products Quality Renown ) made a tappet adjusting tool for Minis and other vehicles that took into account the wear on the valve stems. Pretty sure the firm has gone pop.

The tool was basically a socket with a screw driver in the middle and a ratchet head. You undid the lock nut and screwed down the centre screw until it clicked meaning no gap. You then looked up the tappet reading on a small plastic card and it would tell you how many turns equated to a given clearance based on the thread size.

Brilliant bit of kit - bet someone must make something similar !

I still like the good old feeler gauges & when adjusted right it takes in account of the wear on the valve gear:thumb2 If the tappet gaps are to tight the valves won't fully close which is worse than them being a little to slack

Sorry completely wrong, if the valve stem has worn a corresponding hole in the rocker (which most have ) then feelers are useless you will end up with a gap of the feeler plus the wear on the rocker which could easily double the intended clearance, Rick

The problem is unless you remove the push rods & check them you can't know how much wear there is so best to start at the factory setting & if needed adjusted from there

I am sure Solarman has it right, what is the pitch of the screw thread?, if it is 4 times the clearance his method is foolproof, guesswork can lead to burned valves
Nip up the lock nut a touch to take up the slack in the screw thread while turning the screw otherwise the gap will be a touch more, well worked for me
