My T2 has decided it won't recognise its spare ignition key, ie when I turn it in the ignition switch the engine spins over but won't start (the 'engine' light on the dash flashes). The other key works fine. Can anyone help?

NB I don't use the 'remote' part of either of the keys (ie unlock/alarm, etc) - the buttons are worn out. I just lock/unlock the doors manually.

Have you used that key successfully on the T2 before? Will it open or lock the doors remotely at all? Are you sure its the right key. Has it been programmed for your T2. I have a spare that I got with my T2 when I bought it and I doubt it is the original key as most of the notches on the key seem to have been filed off to make it fit the ignition barrel and door locks. It won't work remotely but seems to have been reprogrammed to my T2 as it works fine manually.

look ok ebay, there are some kits to repare remotes, new batter and two new switches, can be fiddly, but worth it

I'm pretty sure it worked (ie started the engine) when I first got the T2. The remote button has always been worn/ u/s (car had done 90k miles when I bought it). I'm pretty sure this key is original though. It's possible I might have confused the system when I tried (unsuccessfully) to fix the remote button....?

Will try zippy's suggestion to repair the remote, and then see if it will reprogramme.

Cheers for the comments!

N.A.T.S - Nissan anti theft system. :(

Basically they are shite and they die after a while, my 99 Primera did it the day before I was due to go on holiday last year.
What is happening is that your immobiliser and the N.A.T.S brain are not communicating with each other so the immobiliser is staying switched on.
With mine I walked into the shopping centre and locked it with the remote, when i came out it would only open with the key which of course does not switch of the immobiliser. I had to get a Nissan engineer from my local dealer out on a foreigner (£50) to fit a second hand working N.A.T.S system and then program my keys back in. Total £70 fixed. :clap :thumb2

Hope yours is as easy to fix, should be
