Here is the story.
My terrano 2 commercial 'W' reg recently had a new gearbox fitted by a friend in Ireland, it drove back ok then started running abit rough when approaching an incline or if you put your foot to the floor, also Mil comes on when foot goes to the floor then goes off when you release throttle.

So I read all the posts relative to this problem and have done the following

1 Replaced fuel lines front to back + return.
2 Replaced air and fuel filters
3 Cleaned micro filter in banjo fitting.
4 Took of Intercooler and cleaned it out and cleaned the 2 stubby pipes
5 Tested Maf voltage(Ok) cleaned Maf but have not replaced it. Although I did remove it and the car still drove but only in limp mode.
6 Even took the crank sensor out and cleaned that, thinking it might be something to do with the gearbox replacement.

Still no joy car is running exactly the same, when it does run rough it is puffing white smoke out the back any more thought would be appreciated.

Cheers !!

I've never found a successful reply to this, maybe it's the number 1 injector there is a sensor in it. Allegedly, there is also one on the gear box that knows if your idling or not? I've never seen it myself though :nenau

i have heard of gearbox scensor, navaras have them as well.planks no.1 injector is a good starting place theres a few threads on symtoms/prices etc do a search mate might be end of your woes lol!

Check the connection to your cps. after my clutch was fitted it was a bit of a bugger as it had a dodgy connection.or gearbox rpm sensor connection.

Double check that banjo filter again(How did you clean it out) Mine was partially blocked and ran like a pig.You would drive along and hit the throttle and it just wouldn't accelerate then the MIL light would come on, then go off when you had taken your foot off the throttle.

oh i had that.. thought it was cause i was running 1005 veggie at the time

weekend job when warm i think

maybe I'm wrong, but i didn't think there was a 'banjo filter' on a TDI :nenau

When I took the banjo bolt out which has the mini filter in, i soaked it in white spirit for a couple of hours, gave it a good blow out and some crap was left in the tub of white spirit. Is there a way of actually getting the filter out of the bolt? As its slightly different than the one in the download section. Also is the gearbox rpm sensor the crank sensor or something else?

i think some do some dont, depends where and when built i beilve

My filter won't come out the banjo bolt and only became blocked after I had changed the fuel filter.....I am thinking that the inside of the new filter had a tiny amount of rust or bits in it from when it may have been on the shelf for a long time
What I will do from now on is fill the fuel filer before I put it on,then when it is fitted I will undo the banjo nut a bit and pump the plunger to release anything which may get dislodged from the new filter towards the fuel pump in the diesel.
The gauze filter is very fine and from what I saw yesterday of the outcome of having the filter partially blocked is shocking(I thought the engine was heading for a meltdown)
I wonder how many Terranos have been diagnosed with fuel related problems and had injectors and pumps changed when all it needed was the small filter cleaning.

before i found this site,i had a mistral which ran like pig,i suspected injectors so put it into mates place,he cleaned mini filter and jobs a good un,cost me £20 twice price of joining here and seing it splashed everywhere lol !

Terrano 2 running Rough

Finally got this problem pinpointed to crap in the fuel tank blocking the fuel supply pipe, disconnected fuel pipe in engine bay, removed filler cap and blew compressed air back into tank to blow crap out of end of pipe. running perfect for now, but will need a replacement tank, thanks for all your help.:clap

your perseverance won in the end, well done - a lesson for us all.

would taking the tank off and cleaning it help? :nenau

No need to take the tank off if it is the same as the petrol version, just remove the fuel gauge sender unit from the top under the mat and you have good access, Rick
