Hi,

I can't get the car into 1st or reverse gear, the rest work but are hard to get into gear. Called the AA out and they have said it is either the synchromesh or the selector?
Is this an easy/hard job to do, any idea of the cost?

Thanks

ok, so a synchromesh is basically a brass collar which pushes up againt the gear, this slows down the gear as the pressure on the synchromesh presses on the side face of the gear, then the drive cog will engage the new gear. i think all the gears will have one, so i doubt it is that. maybe selector is corroded or needs adjusting. but to be honest, if you are not able to go into any gear, the money is on low clutch fluid/worn clutch so as not do disengage the drive to allow the gear change.
you can change gear without the clutch, just rev the engine before you change up, then let the revs fall as you change gear, voila. this will prove/disprove the selector/synchromesh too. (if it changes easily, it is neither of these).

Check that there slave cylinder. Could be that on its way out not giving you enough travel on the pedel

i wouldnt have thought reverse or first gear would have sycromesh , would have thought more likley that 1st and reverse are on the same shaft and its broken.

1st gear is synchromesh, and has a different selector to reverse, so it’s not the selector.
If the synchro baulk ring becomes worn it generally causes the gears to grate.
I would defiantly check the clutch for drag and also the gearbox oil may be to thick.

did you get this fixed as i am having trouble getting 1 st and reverse they go in but are a bit stiff

update goes into gear no problems before i start up i think it s the clutch as she starts moving as soon as i let clutch up a little bit
