Swap a 2.8 engine for a 4.2 in a Y60

So, my car was stolen and it seems that there aren't many 4.2s around. There are quite a few 2.8s though.

Soooo, how difficult would it be to get a 2.8 with nice body/chassis and take out the engine and gearbox, throw them away, and fit a nice 4.2 engine and gearbox instead?

I wonder what else you would have to change? - prop? rear diff? Would it qualify for a Q plate, or is that for more fundamental rebuilds?

I think you would be far better off getting a late 4.2 petrol in good nick as nobody wants the cos of the MPG:eek:

that way the 4.2D will fit straight on to the box - engine mountings etc leave the running gear and transmission the same - Exhaust will be same too:clap

i have no desire to urinate on anyones pommes frites , but ..... wont the petrol gearbox have different ratios than the diesel one ? :nenau
 
werent someone selling there lwb 4.2d coz there gettin a s w a n k y posh 3.0di version!!!! club valuation please i believe will be correct search terms lol! had to space s w a n k y coz of swear filter!

Yes it probably will - but it will also have overdrive and power hold and diffloc, play around with tyre sizes it will all ad to the fuel economy.....Once it's rolling it makes no odds, and first was a waste of time anyway
 
Good plan, although I went to look at a 96 petrol, it had lived near the sea and the housings underneath were pitted, the towbar was rusty (not the end of the world, I know), there was worse rust under the rear arches, it had a shudder when it pulled off (auto box), a misfire, and other...

There's another petrol at Great Missenden - a 1997 - when I rang about it and the dealer realised how far I would be travelling to look at it he said the wheel arches were rusty (yes folks, a dealer actually said something bad about his car!).

Mine was a 93, it had hardly any rust on it,(but hey, let's not dwell on what a great car those thieving scum got their nasty little hands on for nothing shall we? grrrr.) So far it seems like the later ones are worse (but two is not a large enough sample to be truly representative, I realise).

Oh, and it seems like the petrols are more likely to be autos, whereas I really do prefer manual, so would the gearbox swap directly too, I wonder.
 
ive seen the one in great missenden,hes right next to railway station a red lwb,been there for ages an ages! auto to manual be pain,need pedal box (clutch pedal) clutch an flywheelbearing in back crank maybe a prop then dvla,ins etc etc
 
Jace, I have been looking at Navaras, need to know what torque they shove out tho - any idea what the 2.4TDI produces please? (year 2000). Thanks, oh, and do you know the kerb weight?

What's the red Patrol like? From the photos it looks as if the springs at the back are sagging down.

Yeah, forgot about the need for clutch pedal etc. Auto to manual would be a big job then.
 
i aint been up close,its at back of his yard,theres a rail acess point there,when i saw the petrol i lost interest,navaras 2.5tdi i think the 2000 is square headlight and safe engine? later ones tend to throw a rod through block ,look at em all on ebay,blown engine,blown engine or engine knocking does the d22 section on here tell u weights etc? coz i just load mine then hitch whatever to it so long as it moves jobs a good un!

Long story, but never use Moneygram at the Post Office!!!
Even if you send money to your self as proof of funds.
I'm usually on the ball to these things. Fortunately the wife Googled it and we froze the transaction before the money could be taken out......Phew....only lost £70 not £1800.
just google 'moneygram scam'..

if your using it for towing, don't go for a crew cab truck, the turning circle is appalling and you will have problems with tight bends (and reversing round them) I know I've tried it. Some people may be happy to soldier on with that but it's not for me :thumb2
 
yep turning circle of an oil tanker! the s.african import was better than the kiwi for some strange reason?

and if you have to reverse a big caravan into a small space you will cook the clutch before you finish the job, unless its in a straight line. They do look nice though :thumb2
 
Hello,

much the same as eveyone else but heres my 2 bob's worth :)

I think you'll find most (Y60) have the rust bug:( yours must have been the exception (or an import) just make sure inner cills, inner wings and body mountings are good and the rear half of the chassis seem's to suffer worse, especially either side of the cross member before the rear springs and around the rear cross member (hidden by fuel tank).

I also agree a 4.2 conv. would be a fair hassle, well, easy job but i suppose you'd be looking at another grand on top of the vehicle cost once youve brought all the bits and thats without labour. the 2.8's have a different gearbox, rear diff, rear prop, starter motor, possibly different front springs?

For converting petrol auto to diesel you'd also need diesel starter motor and tap out gearbox to suit, clutch, clutch pedel and master/slave cylinders, fuel filter, glow plug circuit, Change flywheel.

I'd always view with you if its near me and you want a second opinion? :)

Hi Daz, yes I tow regularly in the summer. I have an old LMC 19' twin axle. I do bike (cycle) events. I have towed it with a MkII Granada, a Daihatsu Fourtrak, a Volvo 740 and the Patrol. The Patrol was best. It coped with hills better and, best of all, it swayed not one jot when those idiot National Express coaches thunder past at speeds well in excess of 70. I can't find any torque ratings for the 2.8 - have you any idea please?

I saw the advert for that car in Ilford. It's been lifted tho. I already had to run a drop plate on the Patrol to get the caravan level - if I bought a lifted one... well, not sure how I'd get the caravan level there :) visions of pointing skyward (would def look pikey) lol.

And yes to help looking please. Two pairs of eyes are better than one and another body would give me more confidence. All we have to do now is find something to look at! (shhhh, don't tell anyone, but I have also been considering a Landcruiser).
