a relay, its just has a glowplug in it that warms the oil and then cuts out when the water circulating from the cooling system (which also goes through the unit) gets up to temperature.

really only needed if you're running close to or at 100% SVO.

Thats identical to the one Ive got (for sale if anyone wants to make me an offer ;) )

Its 100% electrical.

Ignition switched relay provides 12v feed to the thermostat. Thermostat, when closed passes current to the glow plug which heats the metal block. metal block heats oil passing through. block reaches certain temp and causes thermostat to open and stop current to glow plug and so it goes on.

Very effective bit of kit and gets well hot, I made up an ali bracket to mount it on away from everything else.

Only problem I personally has with it and I know one or two others have is if there is an air gap where the glow plug screws into the block it seems to lose efficiency but more importantly (especially if its a cheapo glow plug fitted) it burns out because its on so much.

I sorted mine by fitting a decent brand (bosch) and filling it up with heatsink compound. I ran a wire to a tell tale light on the dashboard and the modified glow plug/heat sink seemed to be on a lot less :thumb2:thumb2
 
ps mine came from saverbee and hes f***ing useless at providing answers if you have any problems.

When I blew the first glow plug he didn't believe me and asked all sorts of stupid questions, there's a thread somewhere on here where people with much more knowledge than me guided me to check voltage regualtors and my truck was fine.

He then offered to send me a free replacement glow plug when I placed my next order with him..........WHAT :doh

At that point I has dorted it as described above so I told him thanks but shove it up your arse :lol:lol:lol

Unfortunatelythis was all a week or so after i'd left +ve feedback and ebay wouldn't remove or change it :nenau

tell you what, at one time I had several mates lived out in germany. If theyd still been there I could have been tempted to give them the petrol money to call his bluff and go collect a "free glow plug"

im running a 100% SVO so is this ok for me ?, so the connections stays away from water is this then capped, the seller is waiting for measurements can you tell me this please if you have them thx.

There arent any water connections on the one youre looking at on the ebay sale and nothing to cap :thumb2

The 2 connectors above the side its laying on are the fuel in fuel out (doesnt matter which one)

The threaded connector above that is the glow plug then the thing with the two blade type connectors is the thermostat. You need to make up the connecting wires.

If you want me to draw you a circuit diagram I can , scan it then email or post it on here ?

As far as measurements go i am very sorry but its over a year since I did the job and I cannot remember the diameter of the hose. I'll pop out to the shed, I may have a length of the bit I bought there with the diameter marked on it or maybe the hose on your truck has it marked on?

Surely theres someone on the forum can remember, I dont even have a terrano !!!! :D
 
Yes it'll help. I never measured it scientifically but you could feel a bit of warmth on the hose going between the heater and the pump so it must have been helping. Theres debate around about whether electrical, water or a combo are best.

I was going to fit another of these prior to the filter which a lot of the anoraks seemed to agree was a good scheme................... but i swapped the car instead lol.

Info you need before buying additional stuff:

What wattage is the average glow plug (then you can work out current)

Once you know what current it will draw you can choose the right wire, relay and fuse :thumb2

I did all that when I did mine I just cant remember the figures :doh:doh

The resistance will range (dependent on plug) from about .2 ~ .8 ohms.
However its probably at the higher end so... roughly 17 Amps.
Of course the average current will be a lot lower and increase when temperatures are lower.
 
from memory the equation used is .

p ( measured in watts ) ... is i ( measured in amps ) multiplied by v ( measured in volts


p=i x v
 
Average glow pin/plug draws 20 amps initialy dropping to around 10 when glowing, I guess if it is contacting a heat sink then it will not glow so resistance of the element will stay low which will mean amp draw will stay higher, probably around 12 to 15, if this is the case I would be looking for Glow plug when cold changing over to water heat exchange when water hot enough, one thing you have plenty of in a vehicle is heat, to draw 15 amps to heat fuel all the time (I know it is thermostat controlled) = 15 amp load on the alternator, if you have a 70 amp jobbie then it is getting on for a quarter of the output, too much, Rick
