SVO question again

Dave I reckon you'd be better off with the little ally block that sits in the fuel line with one or two glowplugs in it.

Several reasons:

1. 200w is gonna take a long time to warm up 80 litres of fuel.

2. Meantime you still have about three miles worth (I know cos thats how long it takes your truck to conk out when you put petrol in it by mistake!!!) of thickened fuel in your lines/pump waiting to get to the engine. The underbonnet one still leaves some thick stuff to go in on startup but very little if you're close enough to the manifold.

3. Massive cooling effect of airflow under the tank would probably offset a lot of the benefit.

4. 200w is a fair drain on the electrics on a winters day....

The optimum IMHO, but expensive (£90-120?) option is is the two-way warmer that starts the process with glowplug and then lets hot water take over when coolant is up to temperature......

But of course all is hypothesis until you give it a shot! I'll be fitting the heater I bought from darwin soon so will let you know if that makes a difference.

Interesting to note that, in support of the comments I have read that say SVO usage will expose any shortcomings in your engine/fuelling, My 02 truck runs fine on 50/50 (pure sunflower oil) with just the odd occasional hesitation on startup (1-2 seconds max), Extreme reckons his Makro-sourced veggie oil makes his truck slower to pick up and run a bit rougher, while wifeys old banger (99 plate with 165,000 miles) doesn't bat an eyelid, ever.

If you'd update us on the block that'd be great :thumb2

I use the Makro KTC, I've just hit 92 500 miles and it only hesitates or runs a bit rougher (apart from cold weather) on cold start up ie when its pumping through whatevers in the last bit of pipe before the injectors and theres no real way to warm that at cold start, I get the occasional judder whilst the engines warming up if I push it too hard but after that no probs :)

I've just stuck in 60 litres @ £14.45 per 20 litre tub so I can easily afford a heater out of the relative savings (£16 on this fill alone) and then start saving proper, I just dont know which to go for :confused:

Honestly, if you stuck to, say, 60/40 SVO/diesel one of these, close to your manifold, would do the trick I reckon....or just before the pump it suggests...but no rubber pipe there

Aye :thumb2 I saw that one. The germans do seem keen on their svo :D

I found during the colder spells that it didnt really matter what mix you used within reason , if any svo was present, the initial start up cough was there.

As a rule of thumb I found smell of chips running=potential for cold start cough next time :D

I have considered two of those type, one before and one after the pump.

yeah i'm just mulling over best place to fit...i reckon with max 50/50 i ought to be ok after the pump...:nenau

Trial and error ;) when I got caught out in the cold snap the oil went that thick I couldnt get above 50 mph :D

have you tried putting diesel in it? I find the old T2 runs very well on it, you can get it a most petrol and service stations! :thumbs :lol

So what would we debate on here instead  :lol

we used to do the price of diesel that used to be good for few pages of ranting!

oh then there was the diesle angine being invented to run on peanut oil thing, that was allways good for a few posts.

road tax?

but seriously i admire your courage and experimenting, I used to be an LPG 'pioneer' years ago before the new trend came about, I used to do DIY conversions for classic cars using all home made bits for about £60 and I think all my alternative fuel passion was spent on that!

well actually, re the wife's 99 plate t2, when i had a go in it on start up when cold, it was very perky and rev'd like a dream. and on a short run it was still a little rocket... but once the engine was warm and the glow plugs had stopped warming , it all went a bit like mine on svo... that is, not so revy less responsive to the gas button. and a bit more turbo laggish

to explain it best
kero is really nice. about as close to a petrol as you will get for a deisel . very sharp and quick and really quiet

deisel is normal but still nice in mine

svo mix 50 / 50 it just looses the edge once the glow plugs go out its horrid and lumpy like the engine working very hard.... but its cheep and im poor
its no good at low revs and my gearing really dont help matters

i worked it out my gearing is out 17% compared to standard t2
lets not forget pauls both run on standard size tyres so gearing nice

the perfect match im gussing would be kero and svo 50/50 but the revenue wont agree:(

so you need to either heat it or thin it with something

oh and pauls oil had same effect in mine... so another interesting thing

but remember its an auto, so its turning over at 3/4 the revs of a manual but on standard 16" wheels/tyres.

so have i got to syphon my heating tank then? :augie

yep both lumpy both great cold but lumpy when it stops heating it.
so not the auto box.
tried it manual too with the gears

not much just looses the edge ya know

well i'd defo say its your engine Col; i notice no difference on my truck, in fact bit of an improvement.....and like they say, it runs best in an engine thats fit to start with....and when i get my Tunit fitted.....:naughty:naughty

ill show you next time we meet for me its the gearing thats the svo problem but there is noticeable difference with the auto too when its cold

but trust me thats how its always been. the giveaway for me is that it starts without the slightest hiccup, so i don't think the SVO is having any neg effect at all.....but you need to be wearing golf gloves.

yeah thats cos its warming. it would likely start on pure oil with the heaters going.... the point is it will be better heated or thinned to get the zing back
