I am so happy!
Just went to Makro and they had 20litre poly jerrys of vegetable oil for only £16.45 - that's 82p a litre. Get in. And a full boot for my weekend away :)

Becarfull if you have your own makro card and you buy a large quantity of veggie oil Makro may inform HMRC and then they may come looking for you. Pay cash and use some one else's card. Happy Days Buddy

Not been an issue now for about 12 months eveyones allowed 2500 litres for use as fuel without having to declare it or pay duty on it.

hmmm good point - are they allowed to do that? Harsh if they can. What about the 2 tonnes of black pudding i've bought from them?????

Bump - quarryman we posted at the same time so didn't know if you'd noticed my reply.

Aha! I had heard a little voice in my head mentioning the '2500 litre' rule!

it would be a very hard thing to press in court anyway even if you bought 5000 litres in one day, after all it is cooking oil, whats to say you are going to use it all in the same year?

or as its a cash and carry maybe resell at a profit?

or even cooking your chips in it

I think in reality, we wont hear of anyone being prosecuted for using mre than the limit unless buisnesses using it for large sacle operations.

 Times is getting desperate so I was think of using some of this cooking oil for this reason but I have a couple of questions ....
1. can you use it neat or does it have to be a mix if so what ratio :?: :?:

2. does it matter what type either sunflower or corn oil  :p

it appears that most people are recomending rape seed oil, and if you look at the label of cheap veg oil thats what it usualy is!

Thanks Mr Plank,

A good straight answer, do you or does any body know what the mix ratio is?? and does it matter anyway??

nk some are running 25% ans some as much as 50%, i have gathered this from the other threads note, I dont have the bottle for it myself

I ran nigh on neat at times in my van (renault master with 2.8 iveco engine) it all depends on the weather. Now its warming up you can get away with more than you could in the winter. Start off at 25% or so, run it for tank or 2 then increase the concentration a bit.

Its starting where you notice that you've gone too far first. It will run rough and smoke due to poor atomisation as the fuel will be too thick. In warm weather this isn't so much of a problem. Incidentally thats the reason to use rape oil, its thinner than the others cheap ones. Palm oil and peanut oil are good but they're too expensive in the uk to be viable.

What I used to do was run the tank almost dry on the way home from a run and then put £5 or £10 at the fuel station up the road, this would give me quite a low % for initial starting. Then after I'd parked up I'd top up with enough veg oil for the following day. So I'd run on pretty high concentrations of veg oil after the initial start up. At times I'd drive into the supermarket with it almost empty and fill up there in the carpark - all depended how many miles I was going to be doing that trip.

Stopped using it now, if you think diesel has gone up in price in the past 12months, veg oil has nearly doubled, when I can claim the VAT back on normal diesel its no longer worth the effort or the posible risk to the engine.

not important this time of year bu they recon palm oil sets hard in cold weather!

we have a fridge with a digital temp dispaly and i actualy tried to see which oils set at what temps, it might be worth doing and making a note ready for next winter, its not that far away!

a quick addition, i agree with HB the risk 'v' savongs eqation makes it unrealistic to me. paying around a £1 for veg oil or £1.16 for diesel (the price i paid at asda the other day) you would have to use a hell of a lot to pay for even minor issues.

for example it is understood that using veg oil dilutes sump oil, so if you change it twice as often 2 gallons of decent oil, plus a filter, plus time and effort, shall we assume £40-£60?

you have to save a lot of 16p's to pay for it!

and if you can claim any tax back on fuel use (i doubt you can on veg oil as it is zero vat rated) it definately aint worth it!

Quick bump for this to ask Quarryman if he knows what price our local Makro is currently selling veggie oil for?

I've used up to 50% with no problems, go past 50% though and starting becomes a bit lumpier.
