Driving down the road today, my back wheel parted company with the rest of the vehicle with quite a thump, dumping the n/s rear hub on the tarmac. Upon inspection, the studs are all knackered and the wheel nuts were nowhere to be seen. Got it all recovered and the AA guy, as well as the guy I was supposed to be working for tomorrow and now cannot :doh, reckon some kind soul was probably disturbed trying to nick my alloys and left the wheel nuts loose. Some of the studs are bent, some are left flopping around and all need replacing, as well as the brake backplate being bent and the bumper damaged. What sort of a horror story can I expect when I start to strip it out tomorrow? All advice gratefully received :bow

i had a wheel come off on the m60, it appears it is not uncommon on these, it was the cause of a recall on the maverick/terrano early on.
i bought all new wheel nuts to prevent a repeat, very unerving thing to hapen.
it looked like thread on nuts had just decayed over the years.

hope you are ok.

I have replaced a few studs, the rear studs are shorter than those on the front, so get the correct ones.

New studs from Nissan are (were) only about 1.20 each.

Dead easy; First knock the old ones out with your favourite hitting stick.
Pull the new ones in with a wheel nut and a stack of washers.
Replace wheel, test drive, re-tighten and check.

damage to the bottom of the back plate should not cause any problems, straighten it if bent thats about it, as Ray says studs easy to do, but do check the fit in the half shaft, if you have a loose stud or more it will need a new half shaft, same as the wheel, check the holes for enlarging if they are damaged the wheel can come loose again quite quickly, but I have to say I am surprised you did not notice it before you actually lost it, Rick

Been reading up on the Aus Patrol/Maverick site and it is common for the wheel nuts to come loose. Wheels are falling off all the time from what I read. Ford Australia even did a recall on some models to retorque wheelnuts and fit indicators on the studs so you could see if they moved.Apparently they had bent halfshafts and all sorts happening. I am going to check the nuts on my Patrol 1st thing in the morning as it had new tyres on it just before I got it a month ago.
I hope your damage is not too bad. I would check everthing from the wheelstuds back.Including the brake pipes, calipers, wheelbearings for smoothness and everthing else in that area that would have been subject to the shock of a ton or so hitting the road."dont forget to check the axle housing for cracks just in case" There are several generic guides on the web about changing wheel studs "including all the pitfalls" if you google for it.

Was carrying quite a load of logs in back so handling felt different from normal. Back end started to feel like a blowout so was pulling over when wheel gave way with a wallop.

if you need a shaft and it is the same as a petrol? or a brake drum and maybe even an alloy I might be able to supply and harlowmaverick is here tomorrow so he could bring them back with him?? Rick

Can you pm me your number as I will try Adz first as he didn't need the halfshafts from his breaker? Not sure how I would find out if part is same as yours. Is there a website I can check on? Cheers mate :thumb2

Milners currently showing at £1.80 :thumb2

checkout your motor factors, they should have various lengths and a pound is too much :thumbs

Everything for a reason

Got it all stripped out today and the halfshaft is ok, so just new studs and wheel nuts needed. However, what the strip down revealed was a bit scarier. The wheel cylinder was leaking badly and I think under heavy braking I would have had serious problems  Just spent £120 odd quid with Milners so am now awaiting delivery of studs, wheel nuts, brake shoes and 2 new cylinders
