hi has anyone used sunflower oil to run on and have you had any problems. I recently put 5ltrs of sunflower oil (used and fine filtered) to 40 ltrs of derv and now got serious loss of power and blue smoke. Turbo still spinning so that works no air getting through, and from what i drained out the fuel filter no water in the mix. no water in oil and vice versa. so im totaly confused as to whats wrong other than the mavvy dont lik 'sunflower oil'.
any opinions and advice welcome.

cheers dean.

fuel filter needs cleaning and maybe banjo one too

the sunflower oil will get all teh dirt in the tank free and bung up your filters

also check fuel like could be sucking in air. ( test by changing LAST section of fuel line to clear ) you can SEE if any bubbles then

"(used and fine filtered)" Really
That's probably the problem. I've run mine on neat veggy oil when it was cheap enough . Bio nearly all the time and only ever put diesel in if I'm far from home and running out of bio
So a bit of sunflower and a lot of diesel shouldn't be a prob unless you've got lumps in it OR have had a coincidental failure/problem.
Any warning lights on?

used and filtered, is not good, if you didnt do it yourself...

I have run mine on 100% straight sunflower oil and would do it again if I got the oil at the right price with no issues at all. But there is no way I would use second hand oil filtered or not!

almost 1000 litres of new, clean s/f oil, yes and no problems.

dirty oil is always a no-no.....filtering removes the obvious shite but its still full of water and contaminants from whatevers been cooked in it.

Clean oil is absolutely not a problem and as Plank says, some have run up to 100% neat in summer.

Zippy its home-brew bio-diesel that does that, not vegetable oil.....:thumb2

I'm with Lacroupade, his advice has never let me down :thumb2

Sunflower oil is dearer than derv. I only use new rapeseed at 70%, but will drop to 50% when it goes really cold.

wouldnt it be simpler and easier perhaps , to just treat red diesel ?:nenau:eek:

I have run 100% rapeseed too, I think it is better as it seems a lot thinner at a given temp than sunflower. Having said all that the price it's at at the moment it isn't worth the bother.

I have done a post in the past on sunflower via rapeseed. I found that sunflower waxes before 0c whilst rapeseed oil is not affected. I had problems with sunflower mix so I stick to rapeseed oil, thats if its less than 99p L from ASDA. regards bri

not worth it of you get caught....even with the dye removed its still 100% detectable and you can lose your car as well as a big fat HMRC fine...

sunflower oil

ok thank you, in response i filtered it myself, i had recently found a gunky substance before this in the pre heat b4 fuel filter and reading an article on here i suspect that i may be suffering from diesel bug (maybe) it just seems so coincidental that i chuck sunflower oil in and strait away it plays up and produces copius amounts of blue smoke. so i think drain tank and fresh diesel and filter and see. i have run on bio and found a loss of power at top end by about 7 mph. also no warning lights its a bit pre eml the only thing it does have is a box under drivers seat......?this is i dont know.

I think the box under the seat is something to do with the stereo system? someone will know for sure.

I still think your issue is using used oil!
