hi guys, i recently took my car to a local garage for a oil & filter change ,soon as it was on the ramp the guy pointed out a previous repair patch had been done on the front of the sump ,this being down to the previous owner doing some off roading. the guy said i had 2 alternatives & 1 is to lift the lump remove the sump & weld but its not going to be cheap he said:doh the other was to use some hard setting paste which he put on so far so good ;)but this is on my mind when im on a motorway doing 70 hoping & praying it holds...also my front pipe has started to blow the guy showed me it was on the flexi but he said i cant give me a price because the studs always snap & ive then got to remove the turbo & fit new studs extra labour etc bigger bill scared the crap outta me ...so basically he is saying the front pipes also not gonna be cheap

sump

Hi my sump had to me replaced (rusted through) they removed front diff total time 10 hrs £300 new sump £320 sealent £40 i like u was worried if a patch leaked the sump would empty very quick!!!!!!!
but glad ihad it done roy

The studs dont always snap  Get some of that "Freeze" release spray on them first then get right under there with a tight fitting socket gently catchy pony :thumb2
The hole in the sump was only causing a small smoke screen before, so wouldn't be any worse again would it?
Go for the metal glue patch and relax.
I had to mend my fuel tank with the stuff and that was half way up. It's been bashed around lots since and good as gold.

With reference to the front pipe, I used a local Kwik Fit 7 years ago ( seems like yesterday) the invoice was £96.00 then.

I too was worried about the studs, when I came back to check on it, they had to remove the cross member supporting the front torsion bars, just to get it in..... So they kept their word at the price quoted.

But some members on here have managed to replace the front pipe, by not having to do this extra job..:clap

First of all use some form of penetrating oil, then use a nut splitter on the 3 nuts, and clean up the threads with a wire brush and a suitable threaded die, to clean the thread.
Fit new nuts. Very often I have undone this type of nut, and you think it was turning, then it turns easily and you have sheared the stud.

It may be possible to drill out the stud from the top, and fit a nut and bolt.. or use stainless threaded rod, and S/S nuts.

Down Pipe replacement

Hi,

My local ATS wanted £180 to supply and fit a downpipe on my truck.
So I replaced my front down pipe myself with flexi last year, its not a bad job to do.
You do need to support the rear of the gearbox and remove the cross support to be able to remove/refit the down pipe.
The turbo flange nuts should be brass or similar, mine looked terrible but after a liberal coating with Plus Gas (like WD40 but better) and a 20 min soak they undid with no issues.:thumb2
I bought my down pipe from ebay just like this one @ £55 delivered:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSAN-TE...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item25690290ea

Did all this on my drive without jacking the truck up...
So all in all less than £60 and a couple of hrs aggro it was sorted.

As for the sump, I believe we still have one for a tdi, let me know if you are interested.

Cheers

Steve

mmm some intresting answers ! the sump doesnt look to be a major repair i would guess the paste in all is prob covering an inch .its now been parked up 10hrs with a piece of clean cardboard under the motor & one spot is showing so far, so im tempted to keep an eye on it rather than the hassle & expence of changing it all... an old work colleuge now a manager at our local fast fit centre quoted £75 for the front pipe im very tempted by the price but he,s gonna hate me if they do snap .... i think at that price he,s got the job not my problem then:lol

Mate or no mate, they are used to the studs breaking, they have a tool to "Stud" weld a new one in, but if they do, get them to cover the brake vac pipes in that area, the weld spatter can perforate the thin plastic pipe.

Go for it, you know it's a good price, they can loose the working hours if they get it wrong.
It's not your problem, you don't know the full extent of the work involved.
They soon will though...

Great price.

yeah too right rustik, like you say they do this type of job day in day out & it wont be the manager putting it right some poor fitter on prob £5 an hour! .. ive now got him to order it, going in next fri like you say its there problem not mine

I've never had a stud bust doing a T2 down pipe, and if it did i recon you could get away with drilling it and putting a nut and bolt through with no need to strip anytting down. The pipe is thirty odd quid from milner of road, but don't get their new gasket as it is cr*p and you can use your old one and a bit of exhaust paste :thumb2

How much do you want for tdi sump.

You can remove the front pipe without removing any crossmembers but they are very tight to get out:thumbs
