i thought this could be fun as to guess what the problem is with my car the symptoms are below .

loud rattling /banging noise when on idle , almost like a chain thats loose , but when you rev the engine the noise goes , or perhaps its going that fast i cant hear it ..... car starts first time and doesnt appear to have lost any power , although it does sometimes smell of hot oil ..... prize for the first correct answer ..... a cuppa and biscuit :thumb2
 
first suggestion is from my mate chris at the stroke club ..... he reckons its the fan blade hitting something :rolleyes:

Surely the fan would not stop as you rev it though?

Do the autos have 'thrust' bearing in them? My old T2 used to rattle in neutral till you rev'ed it or dropped the clutch, was told that this bearing was on its way out... just a thought - albeit prob a totally wrong one as far as auto's are concerned!!!! :doh

I'm not convinced it's the engine, why not the auto gear box?

rattle

dont want to state the poss obvious but ive got a mistral that rattled like a tin can until i done the valve clearances.also had a loose exhaust bracket that drove me wild cos i couldnt see it til i dropped the belly plate:confused:

something loose . what was removed to get gearbox in

christ we have been trying to break these for years.... i just wont accept briggie can kill one that easy

not in a week
 
Lets be honest folks it could be anything from a loose bolt or a broken rocker arm to a non existent timing chain :doh

With all due respect the garage is either a bit half there or we arent being fed the full pitch.

I personally would be asking for a lot more info from those at the garage diagnosing it. ie yes it sounds like a a knackered big end but what else supports that.............oill pressure?.........under load or not?............when cold when hot?

The list is endless and all the boxes need ticking before any starts flapping or scrapping.

Lets have some hard info eh :thumb2

exactly, well said, i'm hoping to get more info tomorrow. Luckily i'll have mi mate with me who knows a thing or two about 4x4's...

I suggested to brigge that it might be a good idea to drop the oil from the sump and take a good look at it. Check for metallic bits etc... simple to do and may give a more accurate view of what may or may not have occurred...

it sounds like the drive plate has fractured, which bolts to the torque converter, it is a common fault with auto's,well it used to be anyway lol
