hello all, I am ashamed to ask this... but can someone please confirm that this picture indicates the power steering fluid reservoir ?

I've got the groaning noise when turning the wheel that makes me think it needs the level checking. I have searched the net, read the R20 manual, but cannot find something as basic as a labelled engine bay diagram !

cheers fellas,

Simon

Yes it is :thumb2
If you give the lid a wipe, you should see a picture of a steering wheel

and... having cleaned the right hand side I can see level lines near the top for HOT MAX and HOT MIN, but I cannot see any other lines for COLD. Should I only top up when the engine is hot ? The cap does not have a build in dipstick.

thank you...

Simon

I'm kind of pleased to say there is no picture of a steering wheel on the black cap... spares some of the blushes

As I gave it a good rub just now to check that, it came off in my hand. I guess it was not locked on to the tank, but the positive click on it to hold it in place feels weak. Is that to be expected and I should just check it regularly, or tape it on ?

Where is the mark now?
If it's bellow the low mark you can fill it to between the marks without problems.

Haha I didn’t see any marks on mine so just filled up cold to around the neck of the bottle but not had any problems.
If your level is low and your steering is groaning check the cooling pipes behind front cross member. Chences are you’ll need to remove the bash plate to see them. Two aluminium pipes come down from drivers side and are linked at passenger side with a u shaped rubber hose. The ally pipes tend to rot out under the steel brackets and then start to leak. Mine did it a couple of weeks ago, just shortened the pipes and put the rubber hose back on where I had cut the pipes.

When I went back to it after posting the question about the HOT levels I found I could just about make out a level of fluid through the side of the tank, now it was a bit cleaner, and it looked about 1 inch below the HOT MAX. So I poured in what felt like very little of a 500ml bottle of DexIII (maybe 100ml at the most) until the blurry dark region in the tank seemed to be back up to the max. What the hell. I started her up and not a groan came out when I turned the wheel ! So maybe the level was low because the cap was loose and the fluid evaporates out ?

I feel like I should tape down the cap. I will check it after a few miles have gone by and if its loose again I will tape it. But if the cap stay on and the level falls again I will check the pipes.

Happy easter everyone,

Simon

You often get groaning if the power steering is under high load when on almost full lock at low speed. Also if the front hub ball joints are not well lubricated and of course it is often noisy when everything is cold in winter.

It can be worth doing a full fluid change every 5 or 6 years due to deterioration in the fluid, muck from seal degradation, condensation, drive belt slip etc. The cap should be a good fit it might have gone sloppy due to engine heat, plastic ageing etc.

Never thought about the ball joints, I think mine is definitely due a fluid change though, not been touched since barrbeast put some in on a greenlane in Wales because my cooler pipe broke :D:doh
