My last thread was a stuck sump plug. But now that's freed up and drained I now find that the oil filter is stuck fast. The engine is warm, any tips on shifting this thing before my school run at 4:00?

If desperate could I put the new oil in with the existing filter and try later or will this contaminate the new oil too much and require another oil change?

Thanks

Think you need a 3l guy to answer that, as it looks very different to the one on the 2.7l. From the looks of it, you just replace the element, rather than the whole thing, so putting a screwdriver through the side would be a bad idea.

Personally, unless you have a spare car, I have never liked putting a screwdriver through them, as once you are at that stage you are totally committed and have no fall back plan, like you have mentioned, just re-filling and trying again another day. Leaving the old oil filter in place and changing just the oil is never a good idea, as the filter does get blocked over time, but in an emergency you can get away with it short term. If you did, you would be better doing an oil change again when you did do the filter as the old filter does hold a fair bit of dirty oil in it to contaminate you nice clean new stuff.

I believe you're correct, it's different to the 2.7l. The element is only changed not the housing. Here's a better link to the job ...

I'll keep trying to shift it but it's not looking good so it might be a case of new oil and old filter just so I can pick the kids up later. I should've waited to the weekend for this but couldn't resist getting it started.

You're all right. It's an element that needs replacing. I use a 1/2 inch drive ratchet. There's a rubber o ring for a seal and nothing more. Lefty loosey to spin it off and it makes a mess. It's just a case of constant pressure and eventually it will move. It's ally so you need to be gentle though.
Leaving it for another day will be fine. Best not rush it.

Interestingly there is a built-in metal tray right below it to catch the oil when it comes off. From the tray is a 6-7" drain hose pointing directly at the ground. Nice of Nissan to do that!

This bugger will not shift though. I have a feeling that I will be refilling with new oil and calling in at the local garage sheepishly asking for some help!

Don't go to a garage - you'll pay your *ss off, and chances are they break it. Just wait until the weekend if have time then, apply pressure and a few choice swearwords, and it will come off.

Don't put the new oil in before you have the new filter in place, would be a waste of good oil.

It looks like I haven't got a choice with the new oil as the old oil is drained into containers that I've just noticed has condensed water droplets at the top inside (old 5l screenwash containers). I did think about putting the old oil back in but I don't want to risk water going in with the old oil.

I'd fill with new oil and not worry about changing it again when you do the filter.

Well after trying my best He-Man attempts several times with proper cursing it still won't budge. So, I've called the local garage and arranged to drop by and let them use their best cursing. They said the new oil shouldn't be too upsetting with the old filter as they're only two miles away. They're a friendly bunch so fingers crossed it'll be straight forward for them.

I find it can go really tight on occasion, I just put the breaker bar on it if need be :thumb2

Doesn't need to be too tight when doing up, can't remember torque but it's quite low.

I don't like that design!!!!! I can do mine by hand through my wheel arch with my body lift on the 2.7 :naughty

I'm sure it'll be fine. Next time it'll be a breeze. :thumb2

2.5Kgfm or 24.5Nm.

Well the garage just tried and and stopped trying with the breaking bar and advised getting a spare housing in case the stuck one breaks so that I won't be stuck without a car.

So does anyone know where I can get one of these aluminium oil filter housing from other than Nissan who quote £200 and three weeks?! I'll try some breaker yards and if we can get the old one off without breaking it'll go on eBay.

Would be cheaper to doa 2.7 conversion at Nissans prices

If you manage to find a second hand one I doubt it'll be much cheaper. Also I doubt you'd even sell it.
This is what I'd do.
Ask Nissan if you can return it unused. May have to pay a little something as I doubt they would want it on the shelf.
If you can do that, as soon as they phone to tell you it's in, get outside and give it another go.
I'd try a pal on the t-bar as you already done and a soft oil filter strap around the body. Give it Pepsi and also tap it with a hammer but obviously not too hard.
If it goes Pete tong you'll have to stump up 200 notes. On the other hand? :naughty

Is yours the ZD30 engine, if it is, won't the same engine be in some of the other Nissans like the Navana etc? I know when looking for bits for the 2.7, on a couple of occasions bits listed for the Nissan Cabstar engine are cheaper than the identical bits listed for the Terrano.

If you can find a list of which Nissans have the same engine, you will stand a better chance ringing round the breakers as well.

As far as I know the ZD30DDTi engine is fitted to the Patrol and several cars that I've never heard of ...

Patrol - Chassis Code Y61
Caravan - Chassis Code E25 and VWE25
Urvan - Chassis Code E25
Homy - Chassis Code E25
Elgrand - Chassis Code E50, E51
Terrano - Chassis Code R50
Terrano - Chassis Code R20 (Europe only)
Atleon

I was wondering whether the filter could be adapted to a normal filter but I think is also works as part of an oil cooler.

This is the closest I've got to a replacement ...

That's a good find cos I was wondering about the state of the threads.
Rick might have the answer. He's usually on later in the day/night.
