Stuck Nuts

Continuing my theme of stuck stuff I'm wondering what is the best method for freeing up corroded nuts and bolts.

I recently visited my local scrappy to retrieve a rear bump stop. All four bolts of two stops sheared when trying to undo them. This wasn't a problem but it will be when I come to remove the existing stops on my Terrano as the bolts look as corroded.

So any suggestions on avoiding pain in the arse?

I normally give them a good wire brushing, spray with penetrating oil such as plus gas and sometimes do this a day or two in advance. Then work the bolt or nut gently tightening and untightening. More often than not that works but can take ages working it free but worth it. Of course sometimes they just don't come free and can snap or may need cutting.

Soak and soak and soak in penetrating fluid, clean up any visible thread with a wire brush and use Rustics technique and undo and re-tighten and repeat undoing every time just a little bit more

Now that's ace, I've seen this type of thing on TV removing dints out of panels too.

This is how I removed the bump stop plates on mine.

I did however sheer one off, so drilled it out and put a nut and bolt on in the chassis rail.

Yes, that's what I said, I put a nut on inside the chassis rail (pauses, whilst audience gasps).

It's a fiddle but doable.

I would however question why you are fitting bumpstops from a scrapper. They may well disintegrate themselves shortly and I got a new pair from Europe for about £35.

Some times if the thread is really rusted beyond the nut I cut any unwanted thread off with a angle grinder & slitting disc this will stop it damaging the nut when undoing it.

All of the preceding advice is not much help for the rear bump rubbers as the captive nuts are inside the chassis box section, I have found almost none will undo so do not bother now, just shear them off and tack weld replacement rubbers on, Rick
