i'm getting a really strong smell of petrol near the the o/s rear door area.
noticed it today when i got my daughter out of the car.
had a good look and can't see any leaks of any kind.
anyone else had this problem:nenau

are we talking the area where you fill up or the other side ?

could be a rotten filler hose

Almost certainly fuel pipes. I had a few petrol ones and they all had a pipe or two quietly rotting away:eek:
They start slowly and so most evaporates before you can spy it:sly
Check out where they go between the chassis and body over the back axle area.
Goood luck:thumbs

Also check the plastic pipe just inside the filler cap flap, Mine perished on my Maverick, Changed it and the smell had gone, this dont happen on the Diesel as its oil based fuel and dont evaporate.

thanks for the info chaps.will have a look tommorrow.seems to be around the filler cap area so i'm hoping its just the filler pipe flexi bit.

had a good look around the filler neck flexi and fuel lines but still can't see any obvious leaks of any kind.
funny thing is i can't smell fuel any more:nenau
maybe the filler cap had leaked,i just dont know.
the tank is still holding presssure when i release the filler cap.
will just have to keep my eye on things.

Check the over flow line at the filler cap. Take the cap off and you should see a small pipe sticking up and have a look where it goes underneath and back into the tank.

You might need to take the back wheel off to follow the line, it might have come off somewhere or is rotten.

Had you just filled up or had full tank of petrol when you last noticed it, gone over rough ground?

when i first noticed the smell of fuel i had just been out for a drive.got back home went to the rear drivers side door to get out my daughter and got a strong smell of petrol.
not been filled up for a week or so.
will have another good look in the morning as iv'e broke up from work for easter so ive got a bit more time to give it a good going over.
needs to be right as iv'e got some miles to cover over the weekend.

i dont think your tank should be pressurised check the tank vent/pipe
could be blowing fumes out of cap instead of breather.

thanks ssteve
will have a look at the vent/breather again just to be sure.

finally found the source of the fuel smell its a cracked fuel line:(
it gave out with a vengance last night and sprayed petrol all over the drive and underside of the motor.
looks like my bank holiday plans are out the window and i will crawling around under the t 2 changing the fuel lines.
couldn't have happened at a better time as i'm up to the neck in it at the moment sorting out my mates shogun which failed the m.o.t on friday.
best laid plans:nenau
any advice on how big a job the t 2 fuels line are would be helpfull:thumbs

if its metal fuel line . cant you just cut out the damaged section and replace the little bit with rubber fuel line ...
10 min job id hope.....

got your weekend back then !

Caution - on a petrol this may well be a high pressure line - IIRC the injection pump is in the tank, you need to do this with high pressure hose and proper pipe clips either end.

thought of that but the steel pipe is proper rusted all the way along so i will probably just be chasing leaks until i replace the whole job lot.
looking at doing them in copper but not sure if it will pass mot:nenau
as usual its raining so looks like i will have to do some bits and bobs around the house today:(

This is on my list of jobs to do before the MoT, as I've got a dribbly diesel line.

Terranosaurus, did you come up with a replacement fuel line kit?

Lee. :thumbs
