After draining my old oil today, I come to put the sump plug back in and it wont tighten - just keeps spinning.
The sump plug itself is fine, all the thread are still intact.

So the sump drain hole must be stripped. Bollocks.

What's the best course of action, I've read about Helicoil kits, however most people say the sump has to be removed to do it correctly so no little bits of metal get in the sump.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks.

Helicols

I have used Helicoils in the past.

Have one fitted by a specialist as they are very good at ensuring metal swarf is not left behind and will ensure it is fitted correctly.

In Derby I would use Service Garage at Borrowash they do all such work at the Car dealership where I work. They provide a mobile service.

I am sure you will have someone similar in your area.

I think the boss welded into the sump is plenty meaty enough to simply tap it out next size up, as for swarf just dip the tap in grease and remove the tap after every one turn, all the debris will be collected by the grease, Rick

end stick a magnet to the sump plug after, you might just hold any debre to the sump plug, you can but magnetic plugs on ebay and i used to do this until one snapped, cheep chineese crap:nenau

Thanks for the replies. At least it's not the end of the world and fortunately I'm off work all next week.

I'm in 2 minds as to what to do,
I have the tools to drill and re-thread the bigger hole; therefore just use a bigger sump plug.
Or use a helicoil and reuse the old sump plug?

I'm thinking drill out the hole and use a bigger (M12, I think is the next size up) sump plug. Drill slowly and buy some cheap oil to try and flush out as much debris as possible and then whack a neodymium magnet on the sump to catch anything that hasn't been flushed.
