strange problem

hi guys got a strange problem - its intermittant :doh

my maverick (97 tdi) starts and runs fine but every so often when i cone to a stop, its starts revving as if i'm blipping the throttle - sometime the check engine light comes on but if i give it a rev it usually clears and returns to normal running

i've changed fuel filter and cleaned maf and it didn't do it yesterday but it's started to do it again this afternoon

because the check engine light doen't stay on i'm assuming that it won't store the fault code - but i haven't checked it out

any ideas? help very much appreciated :bow

btw its a zexel pump and hitachi maf if that makes any difference

Most probably it's the micro switch on the throttle . It tells the ecu when your foot's off the gas:thumbs

i assume it on the throttle pedal

you can take it off, but a quick squirt of W D or such like may cure it. Sometimes it's the lever sticking.

f you look up to the top of the throttle pedal you will see the switch and reostat.

Give it a squirt..... you know you want to.......bri

if its a switch I personally wouldnt use wd40, i'd use some electical switch cleaner.

mine does this, but these days its not as bad as it used to be. I have never really found what the issue is, and have done all the things members suggest including the cleaning of the pedal switch. I find its worse when its warm, but not so bad as it used ot be.

mine only does it when it's warm but i've given the pedal switch a squirt to see if that helps

yeah...its very odd, and im not even 100% convinced its temperature related, but i have noticed it much worse when its warm, and perfect when its cold (as in cold outside)

i do wonder now though, if i simply need a new microswitch? perhaps you do too?

sorry i meant when the engine is warm - doesn't do it when i start her up but when i stop at work it starts doing it

i tried giving it a squirt earlier but hasn't cured it :doh - will have to have a better look at the weekend

when it does it, does the whole car wobble?

mines done this since I bought it over 2 year ago, its not as bad these days, but still does it. you can see the rev counter rise a bit, the gear stick wobble (in time with the intermittent thing, not the engine idling). its improved in stages since i had various jobs done, but is still there so im hoping to have it fixed when i get the clutch done and a service...

yep the gear stick wobbles when the revs jump - will see if i an read any fault codes but as the engine check light doesn't stay on - i don't know if i'll get any

I doubt you will, i dont get any codes either. Its been a warmer day today, and i noticed the odd rev thing again...but was perfect first thing and it was chilly...

well i've read the faults and got fault code 47 - crankshaft postion sensor - incorrect signal

can anybody tell me where this is - and where i can get a new one

ah, that old chestnut.

ok, so, looking at your engine, look through the belts on the right, and you will see a small, black round sensor attached with one bolt. Trace the wire up and over the thermostat area to the loom.

warning, they are expensive, but i wouldnt bother buying used.

i'm assuming nissan is the place to go for a replacement, is there only one type/part number?

or are there several different ones - can't see a part number on the sensor

yes, there is a specific part number for your year (same as mine)

from Nissan, part number 259777f400, get them to double check this as there are two for years 97/upwards, so it depends which side of 1997 yours was made!

Personally i tried a few used ones, and thye were no better, so i looked everywhere. th eonly place that sold the correct sensor, was Nissan. Loads of places sell the newer sensors, just not these older ones, the connector is different as is the number of wires on it. mine cost me £190!

right log book says car was register jan 97 - guy at local motor place said it was built in late 96 (according to his computer system)


so that should be right number - will have to ring nisssan tomorrow
