Hi, newbie so be gentle! My Patrol (54 plate) is producing a noise from the engine, like a shrill type noise (not squeak), when I apply the accelerator, noise goes, as I release 'it's there', so between gear changes and on idle - gut feeling was belt of some kind but don't know where to look / check apart from BIG main belt that I can see behind radiator. That looks okay, noise os coming from more near the back, i.e. nearest to where engine meets where driver and passenger sit...sorry I am NOT a mechanic, as you can tell!! She's done many miles (95K) and has just been serviced, I am a bit anxious. My mate said that they just keep going ;) Hope someone can help.

Hi and welcome, sounds live resonance to me.

Loose cover, loose exhaust bracket, if it does it when stationary then have a probe around, or get someone to gently rev it until it happens.

Besr regards,
Richard

Thanks! I am a worrier unfortunately - but I will have to calm down and enjoy the drive as I love her!! But just checked service report and they mention ribbed belt squeak, which they say was lubed, all okay 'for now'. Is the ribbed belt the BIG one towards front of engine? As in nearest to radiator, front of car.

My belts were noisy too and same trick all ok several years afterwards. Join the club of worriers!! me and clivvy are the founder members:augie

To check it is a belt, slowly pour some water on the belt...
But stand back

The squeak usually goes for a while.
I had a chatter on the steering pump on my mav, it was only the belt.
Worry over.

Good tip, will try that - but has my engine Turbo Diesel (SVE Di) only got one belt? Just been looking with a bright light and noticed dip stick was not housed correctly so now additional worry of 'hmmm, has oil escaped all over the place'...there is a bit of oily residue on battery and couple of hoses, but not much! Anyway did stick now in place - thanks service boys!!

My dads got a pathfinder, it does the same thing. turns out its the bearing in the altenator, dont worry his been doing it ages

Might be worth checking EGR valve gasket and vacuum pipes. Had this recently on an L200.

Get under the bonnet when its ideling and have a listen, if its coming from the 'belt' area might also be alternator or idle wheel barings.

Could try taking the belt off and running without to see if it stops the noise.
