Hi all, can anyone give me a few pointers before i get my tools out...

Today going around a left hand turn with my window open i could hear what i would describe as a strange clicking noise coming from the front right wheel, which disappeared when i straightened up and didnt occur when i turned right...

Any ideas what it may be?
I was thinking maybe the wheel bearing...if it is how easy is it to replace and whats the cost of parts likely to be?

Any help is much appreciated

Sounds very much like your auto locking hub jammed partially engaged, feel the hub it may very well be warm. As a temp fix stick it in 4wd and drive backwards and forwards a few feet and then same again back in 2wd to unlock the hubs.
Sounds very much they are ready for servicing, check out the download section for this. The tabs on the Brake Ring's may be broken causing this jam.

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply.
I never thought of the auto hubs, i will check them out.
cheers

Yes auto hubs most likely, could also be CVJ, check the boot for splits if water has got in it will click on turns, in the early days of CVJ's ie early Mini's etc it was common, do not seem to see it so much now, any one answer as to why, Rick

I have the caliper slider pins to free off tomorrow so i will check whilst i have the wheel off, cheers for the replies

as above, CV joint is my guess.:thumbs

okay so when i check the CV joint i am checking for splits in the gaitor?
What if it isnt split, how do i check to see if it is on its way out?

Is it a big job to remove and replace, i know how it comes of the hub end but how does it come off the diff end?

easiest way to check is remove the 6 hex socket bolts on the auto hub and remove it, then take it for a test drive, if it still clicks then CVJ will need replacing at some point in the future, but hang on a mo, I am not thinking clearly, if you are not in 4 wheel the shafts will not be rotating, so it will be the hub remove it anyway for a test, Rick

best test for CVJ I know, is full lock drive in a circle both directions (left, then right full lock). On full lock, if its the CVJ, it will click worse and be very obvious.

but not on a T2 unless you are in 4 wheel, early ones anyway up tp 99 I think, Rick

When one of my hubs was clicking the best way I could describe it was "a plastic lolly stick in the spokes of a childs bike" but quieter, it's speed is related to vehicle speed too. Mine made the noise turning left and was indeed the lh hub causing the problem. It also overheated the hub to the extent that it was smoking.
As Rick say's when 4wd not engaged the front shafts will not be turning so makes the CV less likely.
