Hi
Still looking for a Patrol and with advice from you guys (thanks) looking at a post 2002 3.0l. There is one locally (which is a rarity) - 2004, full service history, no corrosion references on MOT check but it has done 250k miles. Gearbox (Auto) replace 'recently'.

Should I be concerned about the mileage?

Any comments appreciated.

Big engines can do big miles if looked after properly, but be prepared to replace and maintain things on any motor with that kind of mileage on :thumb2

There is nothing to stop these engines going 400 k plus miles, IF THEY HAVE BEEN LOOKED AFTER, ie oil and filter changed at max 6 k miles or 12 months also fuel filter, re the box change , yes I would not expect an Auto go more than 200 k, Rick

Auto Box Replacement - that would put me off.

Personally I think unless its incredibly cheap that 250 k miles is too many for a used purchase unless you are prepared to have a hefty annual service & repairs bill with sufficient funds in reserve or can afford to scrap it if a major component fails.
Yes the engine can do the miles but can the differential, the transfer box, the alternator, air con if fitted, fuel systems, not to mention the suspension etc.

As an example of what I consider to be a reasonable service (based on 12k miles a year) cost my Jeep cost £613 in the first year, £317 in the second year, this year in the start of its third year £1006 due to suspension overhaul most repairs done myself or by a mate at reduced labour costs.

I would definitely rule it out due to the gearbox replacement as it is unlikely to have been fitted with a brand new genuine Nissan Auto Box.
More likely it has had a used box fitted or probably even worse a so called reconditioned gearbox by an unknown firm. If the gearbox has a warranty that transfers to the new owner that is worth the paper it is written on that helps.....but.

It's like the Buses !

Thanks Maca, wise words.

I have found that when I am looking for the right motor it can take me a couple of months doing the paper sift & MoT check. I end buying a motor that is almost what I want but patience gets the better of me or the need becomes more urgent.

After I have made the purchase and had it a week three better ones come up for sale lower mileage, fewer owners, better specification and usually cheaper ! lol

I think that's where I am now.
I've been watching a couple for a while that if they only had a few lower miles, a year newer or go faster stripes I'd have snapped them up.
This is the danger time, but there are so few about and those that are are miles away....other than that 250k miles one which otherwise is perfect and just up the road!

Before we bought our Jeep we searched for a Patrol but nothing within our price and mileage range. That said the Wife now loves the Jeep so it was a result in the end of sorts.

Based on what you say I would be looking at how long the 250k one has been on the market, if more than a few weeks there has to be a reason why it has not been snapped up if they are that rare, it just maybe people are put off by 250k but these motors if looked after are well capable of much more that that,so check the service history, you say it is complete well check that it is, if so buy it, Rick

It's tempting but how much of a gamble it is, I don't know - don't know enough about these trucks.

OK you need to view this motor and go through the FULL SERVICE HISTORY FROM NEW, not the MOT stuff, what you will be looking for is regular 6k oil changes etc for its full life, not bits here and there, if there are any big gaps walk away, FULL SERVICE HISTORY SHOULD BE JUST THAT, also the receipt for the NEW box it should state new not used, Rick

Thanks,

Went down on Saturday to have a look only to find it had been snapped up. The search goes on.
