Steering problem

Hi All, wondered if i could get some help with a couple of things! got my first terrano 2 10 days ago only done 33 k on an S plate really pleasedwith it :lol: but just a couple of things to ask 1. when i put it on full lock it makes a clonk sound? 2. how easy is it to change the diff oil? and do i have to do it with the miles its done?
also i seem to get engine noise more in the passinger footwell? is this normal or am i just imaging things which i have be known to do :roll:

Hi Danny.
Clonking on full lock is most likely because of lack of grease on steering stops. These are situated one on each side and they will be pretty obvious to you if you look underneath from the front. They need a good dollop of grease on each surface.
Rear differential is a limited slip type. These can suffer from stickiness due to old gooey oil and cause back tyre screech when cornering. Best plan in my opinion is to change this oil, making sure you refill with proper LSD oil.(Halfords have it ) There's a plug in the bottom of the diff to drain and another on the casing, about half-way up for refilling. Just fill until oil starts to overflow from the upper plug. I did this on my T2 and it made one heck of a difference to rear end behaviour.
Engine noise at passenger footwell COULD POSSIBLY be because of removal of sound insulation under carpet. Sometimes this is done to find rainwater leaks. There are threads on this. Best to do a search on "water in passenger footwell". Unfortunately I had a swimming pool in the front of mine but it's all OK now.

clonking is the stops on the hubs / wishbone see the downloads section for this, easy job just grease.

diff oil rear? front?

rear will be LSD limited slip diff oil needed, i think it holds 2.8ltrs basicaly undo the filler plug first incase stuck, this can be open with a 1/2 socket wrench square end where you fit the socket, do the same for drain plug, once drained then fill with cheap lsd oil and drive for 50 miles approx, then drain as this acts like a flush oil, then replace with good quality LSD oil and you will feel the difference at junctions etc as in backend not stepping out when cornering or pulling out of junctions.

front diff i think it is 80/90 but please check, i think there are some specs for this in the forums.

Hi danny73 welcome to the club, funny one of the first things I had to do with my first T2 was the steering stops, have a look on the home page at the top in the down loads pics are the and easy explanation.

i was thinking the same as you mate, maybe exhaust mountings even?
