Hi,
am experiencing a squeal from the steering, which is gradually getting more frequent, used to just happen on full lock, but seems to happen manouevring on car parks etc. anyone got any ideas what is causing this and what to do to fix it:confused:

Thanks Wayne

power stearing fluid possibly

but mine is definitely the rear diff now... at first it sounded like coming from the front . but its not . its the rear diff

try it with windows open or get someone to stand in car park while you drive around them

prolonged or short and sharp?

First thing check your fluid level as the P/S oil cooler pipes are none for spring leaks under their mounting below the rad, then check the P/S belt as it maybe slack or past it's best:thumb2

First thing to do would be to check the tension and the condition of the power steering belt.

When you turn full lock you load up the power steering which puts pressure on the belt so if the belt is worn smooth on the inside or slack the belt squeals as it's slipping.

Over a period of time the belt gets slacker or worn hence more regular squealing on other turns.

and if it is the belts, heres a bit of advice...(1) change all three, and (2) while you are there check your water pump for leakage as they start very slowly from underneath (common problem) and can't be seen from above until its well advanced.

But based on the fact that TW's ace mechanic has just swapped out the leaking water pump on my wifes T2 after 165,000 miles and it seems to be in perfect working order (so I could have saved myself the £80 cost of a new one!!!!), personally on a truck of your vintage I'd whack a new pump gasket on to save myself the trouble later.

I'm told you can do it without removing the rad but probably not worth trying as its too easy to damage it in situ...Extreme will be along shortly to tell you how easy it is....:thumbs

it can be done without removing the rad, i did it on yours to see if it could be done. but in truth its probably a whole lot easier to pull the rad out .
its only 10 mins to pop the rad out and it saves loads of struggling and fingers squashed so you make the time up two fold
its not like the t2 has a cooling system that requires hours of air locks and bleeding the system . they are just fill up and go almost.

the hardest bit of the job is getting the new belts on, they are always a tight squeeze

paul i thought your pump looked ok too. but on the bright side you know its right now and problem free so its 80 quid well spent id say
i dont think its worth putting the old one back on unless your selling soon or you got very low miles

well i did ok out of the deal......very rewarding , she kept asking if i would like something hot and wet:nenau

in the end i surrendered to her offers:naughty:naughty:naughty

Thanks for the replys, will check it out asap, have just got in from work ,(on the dreaded noon shift).
Lacroupade,- the squeal is very short. as soon as you turn the steering wheel a tad it stops. seems fave that it could be the power steering belt. let you know me findings.
Thanks Again Wayne
