Steering damper - is there one?

Simple question really. '97 Mav/Terr 2.7tdi (round lights) is there a steering damper? I cannot locate it from the underside unless it's under some sort of Klingon cloaking device

There is not one i know but i have been wrong in the past.

Like ernie i am confident there is no damper, i beleive there is on a patrol but not a terrano, but i will happily be corrected if i am wrong

The reason I ask is it seems a bit twitchy on the front end over uneven roads so coming from a 4x4 environment of live front axles the first port of call for me would be steering damper replacement. Especially at this milage. But I'll x that one off then?

Guess track rod ends/bushes/shocks? :roll:

I god thing would be to get a nother member to have drive and see what they think, or even have a go in another T2 as it may just be the diffrence in the charecteristics of the steering. As you probably know, many quick fit type paces offer free wheel aligment/brake checks etc. i ofetn take advntage of these just to get a good lok underneath and get a free bit of piece of mind!

It is due in for a general service (sans the bits I have already done which is is basically everything) and MOT in a few eeks so I'll get them to give it the once over.

Did find out while going through some old receipts that one garage had noted a damaged front shock bush during an MOT. Their response was to charge Lou for a new damper (£70!). So I hope for handling and safeties sake that they ripped her off for the price of a new bush and just swapped those! Changing one damper at 120k is a no, no in my book!

if you look under landys youll see shock absorber on steering linkages underneath take shock bumps rutts outve system

Yes it sounds like the steering idler. The idler is on the passenger side chassis rail and supports the track rod arm if it is worn the slop will cause the tracking to go out when a load is placed on it. there is no steering damper fitted and to be honest i have never heard of anybody fitting an after market one

when were L/R built to a tolerence? is that a new thing
I have got a new defender at the moment the new one with the transit engine and decent gearbox but the rain still comes in on the drivers side door top and the passenger door has to be forced shut. I love the build quality

mate mines going to look at one new v6 tdi jobbies he wants a d40 she wants landy i just said whats goona happen when its time to chuck chip or logs in back like we do with the l200 worrior and my d22! its done 11k asking £23k for it! poor lads gonna get pestered to death lol.
new transit engines being pain cam chains alsorts fallin off so well suited to front landy!
