Steering box strip

Banshee wants a box to convert to an idler, so to reduce shipping weight, and to see what makes it tick and as I got rained off today, decided to strip one.

This is pic one of six, and shows the straight ahead datum marks

Centre cog in the straight ahead position and is machined slightly bigger than the rest, on a tapered basis larger at the top smaller at the bottom so the lower the shaft drops the tighter it gets, the bolt in the top controls this by lowering or raising the shaft slightly, there should be no play on the drop arm in the straight ahead position, best way to adjust is is to remove the ball joint from the drop arm

here you can see the needle rollers that support the top of th shaft and the threaded hole for the adjusting bolt

this is the piston that does the work

this goes inside the piston and is full a ball bearings to transmit manual steering with oil pressure being fed to one end of the piston depending on if you are left or right hand down at the wheel

And this is the control valve that determines if oil goes to one end of the piston or the other, it is regulated by the turning force on the splined end which is a separate part to the rest of the shaft and is spring loaded inside, the harder you turn the wheel the more oil pressure is fed to the piston, Rick

Fantastic Rick often wondered what it looked like on the inside:thumbs to adjust any free play in the steering box do you adjust it by the slot in the center of the shaft in photo 2 ? I know it not often it needs to be done but I curious just in case one day mine needs a little tweak

yes make sure the box is lined up straight ahead, remove the ball joint from the drop arm and check for free play, there should be none, if there is loosen the nut and slowly and gently screw down till the play goes, do not go any further and lock the nut up, Rick

Thanks for that:thumbs not sure if mine has a little free play sadly or not but i'm sure the track rods & relay bar might need replacing next year so it would be the perfect time to check it to know for sure

only way I have found is...

At the top of the thread you want to mark, there is a drop down called "Thread Tools"

In there you can "subscribe to this thread", this will let you know every time someone up dates it.

To find it again,

When you go into your own control panel, on the left there is "Subscribed Threads". and in there, "List Subscriptions", which will list all the threads you have tagged..
