starting problems

hi, purchased 1999 2.71 last week end . starts on the button and runs brilliant .

changed the fuel filter yesterday . primed system using pump on top of filter housing . took ages to start , thus flattening the battery , charged battery now still a pain to start and puff of white smoke when it does. once up and running no problems ticks over and runs great.

I was wondering if the diaphram in priming pump has split as can hear faint hissing from top , would this cause these symtons ?

Sounds like air getting in to the system. For some reason some fuel filters don't seal right. Also check the quick links for the mini filter download as this may have a little dirt in it.

fuel filter

check filter is sealed, did you fill filter with fresh diesel it helps,then screw on.
tow it if i wont start,
it turns the engine faster in 2nd gear.
had two perkins engines over the years they would not start without a drag,
drag it and it would start within 10 yards,

hi thanks for reply , engine does start but through chuggs and puffs to start

but once started its fine . as mentioned all was ok until filter changed. regards , dave

when you swapped the filter, did you prime it BEFORE starting the engine? are you priming it for long enough, takes what feels like an age...!may be worth removing filter, then refitting, as JIm says, some filters dont seal right...

just retightened filter , did manage 1/2 turn , did'nt hear the hiss after this either , hopefully all it is .

Just a thought when you put a oil filter on you put a smear of oil on the rubber, has any one tryed this with a fuel filter it might make it slip better to get it tight and seal?
